More on 3d Frame "Printing" v2.0

Just watching FOX Business interview with CEO of UPS. They are going to be installing 3D printers in their retail stores. If they install high end equipment you will be able to "print" frames in sintered metals and perhaps a polymer that will be suitable for ophthalmic products.

It is going to be very interesting to see how 3D printing technology changes things.

Agreed. I read somewhere that in 2014 it supposed to explode because of some expiring patents.

Here's an article I just saw in Popular Science about 3D printers: A 3-D Printer Can Pay For Itself In Less Than A Year

This doesn't even begin to approach the possibilities with this technology. For instance, a plastic gear in my pool pump was stripped. I had to get a service technician out here and he had to replace the whole mechanism because that gear was not available as a single piece. If it had not been under warranty, the cost to me would have been about $340 ($240 for the part and $100 for the service call.)

A 3D printer could have made this part easily and would have cost only a couple of bucks at most in material. In fact, I can see a lot of manufacturers and repair shops custom printing pieces like this in the future.

Branding and prestige will become even more important. Branded eyewear will have to spend even more dollars to influence the public and opticians and/or they will have to get more and more famous people to wear their product. What if 3d printing turns out to be ENVIROMENTALLY FRIENDLY too?

Yes, 3D printers are amazing. The trick is getting the right file to print. You can't just say, "print me a x, y, or z." You have to have an Solidworks, Autodesk, etc. file made of x, y, or z. That takes time, often expensive software, and expertise.

True, but it won't be long before people are sharing files.

What would be really sweet is the ability to scan the face of the wearer and print a frame with a 100% fit over the nose.

I really like the 3D printed AR lower and the young man that has made it a mission to file share it.

This will certainly create some interesting legal issues. Suppose I sell you the file that you need to print a frame for which I designed and hold the copyright. I grant you a license to print 5 frames. Now you, being the scoundrel that you are, run off 5000 frames and then sell the file to 100 other scoundrels.

We do live in interesting times.

Yep, this is going to be a legal nightmare for people protecting their patents.

You know what? Sometimes it is not a bad idea to listen to the second opinion! Let me spend another 16 hours to move it out of $1 store! Thanks bro!
