Please give me an answer to this question or I'll smack you upside the head :-)

    Hello everyone,

We have a new boarder that would like to know if New Mexico requires licensing for opticians? If anyone knows the answer and doesn't want to get smacked upside your head by none other than me ;) I suggest you cough up the info muy pronto :)

If I do not receive this information quickly I will be forced to post nude pictures of Ernest Borgnine on the board :)

Get the lead out! That is all.

    Darris C.

The new boarders name is Patty and I would like to welcome her here. If she has any other questions for us to answer we will be glad to help. Everyone say hello to Patty or the Borgnine picture thing will apply :)

    Yikes!!!

Moderator or not, this action alone would be sufficient grounds to ban you for life! ;)

Seriously though it doesn't appear that New Mexico has a functioning Opticians Association. Nor could I find any reference to licensinf requirements. Hopefully one of our other OptiBoarders will come up with a more definitive answer.

Before we get more welcome messages, let's get this message thread back on track.

Does anyone know if there are any licensing requirements for Opticians in New Mexico?

I would say NM doesn't require licensing. If you go into the state statutes, any person who neutralizes lenses or takes PD's and fits hardware is considered an optometrist not an optician.

    Unhappy

I checked with two colleagues in New Mexico. Both told me that New Mexico does not have licensed opticians. There is no NM State Board for Opticians, and opticians are not permitted to fit or dispense contact lenses (the state's view being that fitting or dispensing contact lenses constitutes practicing optometry). Both colleagues told me that there isn't any big battle going on with optometry, and that the non-licensed status of opticians is pretty low key.

Opticians there will often promote the fact that they may be ABO and NAO, but that's about it- no NCLE as they can't fit or dispense CL's. In short, other than a business license that's all you need to be an optician in NM.

P.S. Even worse than a nude photo of Ernest Borgnine would be one of me climbing into my hot tub (picture a large albino walrus clambering into the water)
