    Thanks Steve

I want to thank Steve Machol. It has been nice around here without all of the consumer posts. He made an announcement on the Optiboard News and Info Forum that as of 9-22-06 only optical professionals would be able to post. My prayers have been answered.;)

OK I was originally in favour of keeping the consumer posts, but, of late, I started to change my mind. One of them actually posted pictures of her new glasses with a "minus 6.00" prescription in a 1.6 index. She went on to advise all other minus 6 wearers to look at her pictures, 'cause thats what their glasses would look like too. The post was quickly deleted, but that's what prompted me to write the post about consumers becoming advisors on this site, which then became a sticky. Another consumer didn't like her transitions, so she decided the board was the place to warn other consumers about the fraud we opticians were foisting on the other consumers, by selling them transitions. She actually got quite rude, which promted me to become uncharacteristically rude back, and told her to go bother someone else. I can only begin to imagine the posts I didn't see which were deleted. On the flip side, most consumers were generally well meaning and polite, but it was becoming obvious that this board was becoming more oriented to a consumer information and advice site, and was moving away, or being moved away from it's long term purpose, which, of course, was a forum for eyecare professionals to discuss things among ourselves. recent immature spats among professionals notwithstanding, I think the move is a benefit to us all. A prevailing theme on this board is professionalism and education, and there are those who have a wealth of knowlege that is humbling, yet they will, without reservation, share that knowledge with anyone who requests it. I often find both both clinical information as well as humour on the board, and in some cases, both at the same time. I try to be funny myself from time to time, and may occasionally succeed. Its about give and take, teaching and learning, and sometimes finding out you are not the only one in the world to lose a customer because there is no warrantee on a pair of glasses that were 10 years old, and were lost on a trip to Ecuador. Its been fun. Lets do it some more.

Agreed. I originally voted in favour of consumers but it seemed Steve's poll became a lightning rod, drawing in all the grumpy abusive consumers. It does seem a lot nicer since that announcement.

In addition, I have been surfing some forums lately (bathroom renovation) and I don't think I realized just how good we have it here. It seems every other forum out there is swamped with spam for cell phones and cheap meds. Thanks for all your work keeping those out of here too Steve!

Actually the consumers couldn't see that poll because it was only open to OptiBoard members with 50 posts or higher. However I too started out in favor of allowing consumer posts (in their own forum) but the increase in abusive and angry responses from from non-eyecare professionals (along with personal harrassment which you know nothing about) convinced me otherwise.

Why do people think that bullying and insulting someone will produce anything positive? :hammer:

Not from me. They get a shotgun to the sidewall and replaced with a wheel that doesn't squeak.
