If an ophthalmic website that is similar to this board and opticampus, can it be mentioned here?

I don't know the answer to your question but I wanted to say "welcome to optiboard" ~ :cheers:
Don't be shy!!
Karen :)
Sure, post links to other optical sites if you want. :)

Checked your profile Dude. Cool site.:cheers:
Wow ... that IS a cool website ... :cheers:

I really appreciate this. My website is called http://www.opticiansfriend.com and is a site that parallels optiboard and opticampus somewhat. The main difference is that it is geared towards NJ Opticians and the Tri-State area. NJ is the lone state in regards to certification. We have a 4 part test which many call "brutal" as well as laws that differ from ANSI standards. (for ex. The ABO is not a valid certification in NJ.) My desire is to support NJ opticians, in particular, but of course there is significant overlap with the plight of opticians nationwide, and all are welcome. I'm here to help.
Thanks,
Al

Very nice site, GREAT JOB.
And big cheers :cheers: to Steve for letting people post these kind of things.
CLASS ACT!!!
I checked out your site as well... Great site...:)
Please check out www.OptiForum.com.
This site is under construction and it includes a message board similar to this one but i will try to make it look a lot different. I would like too add links to other sites like opticampus. That is an excellent site.
We started OptiForum to provide an online forum for technical support for our customers Since then we have changed it dramatically to serve the whole optical community.
Special thanks to Steve for letting us post links to other similar sites.:cheers:
Great site Dude!
I think we all have our interests and focuses that make our boards unique as well as the overlapping umbrella of opthalmic optics. I think as more Opthalmic health practitioners become more computer saavy, there will be a suite of forums and tools to pick from (or join all of them :) ). I strongly believe that opticians have a need to get organized in order to bring up wages and standards. If I'm not mistaken only 23 states have any type of licensing board for the dispensing of glasses. It boggles the mind with all the technological advances in this industry, how do patients get reliable info/spectacles or complain about opticians in unlicensed states? Standards need to be raised and more states should become licensed (those of you already opticians get grandfathered in). Professionalism needs to be percieved as well as applied to our craft. The 2 go hand in hand.

Your site is very cool. I love the interactive stuff.
Cheers

I have completely changed the layout and format of the site and would love to know your opinions on it. I used something called wordpress which is a great content management tool. Any of you considering making websites of your own, should consider it as an option. It's very easy to work with and offers a lot of flexibility.

I think it looks very nice !
I like the optics study guide and formula finder and the optical tools .

Hey Dude,
If you go into the file directory on this site you will find some of the equations you are planning on writting already done. They are ready to be posted on any web site and you can use them without any links, also I have used CSS to style them so it should be easy to swith the style sheet over to the same one your site uses and maintain a consistent look. Let me know if you need any help with programming.

I appreciate all of the help Harry. What I may do is look at some of your code and adapt it to fit using JSP and Java. Something about javascript irks me. I will definitely give you props and share the jsp and java code with you too. What I will probably need the most help on would be the optometry database thingy.
Opticiansfriend.com guy.
Let me know what I can do.

There is this project I would like to do and it would be very simple too. The Lens and Lens option finder. Basically it would involve a lot of research into what is and is not available and its corresponding options, info.
I always hear questions about whether or not a specific coating is available, Rx range, base curves , adds etc...
The way I envision it would be using drop down menus
Lens type {Single vision, Bifocal, Trifocal, Progressive, Occupational, Safety}
Material { CR-39, Poly 1.66, etc......}
If progressive is selected
Design {hard design, soft design}
Corridor(14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 22mm}
Selecting all of this would yield all of the info like BC and adds etc... If it can come with specific A/R Transitions, Abbe, specific gravity etc... maybe even comments or ratings of lenses.
I honestly don't know if this has been done, but Rob (my moderator) and I haven't found anything like it. Rob and I would of course help in gathering information
Opticiansfriend.com guy.
Al,
That sounds exactly like the LensMap software that is available for download. You can download a demo but have to purchase the full version I believe. I gives you everything you stated except the coatings. You choose (SV, BF, TF, PRG) than material, manufacturer, color options (ie trans, polar etc...). It then gives you a complete list of all the lenses that match your search with the available base curves, manufacturer info, power info etc. You should check it out as it might be just what you're talking about. I have downloaded it and used it.
Here is a link to their website:
http://www.lensmap.com/
Here is a post from OptiBoard about it also: http://www.optiboard.com/forums/show...oto=nextnewest
Hope this helps?
But why does it cost money? :)
Although I haven't used it or even heard of it (and thanks for pointing this out to me, by the way). I think with some research and a few hands typing we (Harry, Rob and I) can probably crank out something that is equally useful and free. It may not be as complete yet, but through a year or two I'm sure we could give it a run for its money.
Opticiansfriend.com guy.
It's 40 a year????
Opticiansfriend.com guy.
Al,
I don't doubt that you three would be able to do this, in fact it would be great to see something like that free, however it would be time consuming like you said and you'd have to keep up with all the changes that take place continuously. I know that $40 for the 1st year and $20 every year after seems expensive but think about how expensive the FRAMES books are they are almost $400 / year. I just thought LensMap sounded like what you were talking about and that it would give you a good resource and starting point maybe. Also I just wanted to say that your site is a great resource and to add something like this would be amazing. Good luck and let me know what you come up with. :)

If you hav a specific format for a database or spread sheet let me know and then we could split it by manufacturer till we finish. It would take some time but, its doable, especially if you were to make it an open project and the end result is a free piece of software for the optical community, COUNT ME IN
