Using our educated guessing abilities, why are car windshields still made out of glass? Why not polycarbonate? Is it a cost issue or a safety issue?

Using our educated guessing abilities, why are car windshields still made out of glass? Why not polycarbonate? Is it a cost issue or a safety issue?
The stuff scratches so bad, it wouldn't last (as something you could see through) for 24 hours.

Chip's right, poly wouldn't hold up - even with a scratch coating.
I had erroneously thought that windshields contained a polycarbonate layer in between two glass layers which help improve it's impact strength. However Jim Schafer corrected me on this and pointed out that the inner layer in windshields was actually polyurethane, not polycarbonate.

Tom Clancy...(Hunt for Red October fame, now writing for money rather than content) has reported that the windows in the White House are Polycarbonate.It was just a one or two sentence thing and he didn't elaborate so I have no further info.

Why not have
airplanes waifered with interlocking poly panels and air bags at each passenger seat?

Jo what you need to do to fully appreceate why not, is to ride a bike with a full face helmet on in the dark when its raining. If you have a nice new visior its bad... then try it with a week old one.....
Do y'all think that Transitions is perhaps overlooking this rather lucritive market? That is, putting thr transitions material in the inner layer?

Ooh! This one I can actually answer. Photochromic car windshields already exist. So do windshields with rain sensors. They work like touch screens; the raindrops break the field and the wipers go on.Texas Ranger said:

Quite a few European manufacturers offer automatic windscreen wipers, such as Mercedes and Citroen, for example.
Like many new gadgets, though, I find the idea a bit of a gimic- drivers need interaction with the environment to keep their attention at a high enough level.
Jaguar and Mercedes are also prevelent in supplying radar based 'adaptive' cruise control systems, which automatically keep a safe distance from the car in front. Why not just sell the car with 3CPO and R2D2 to do the whole damn job for you...

My wife won't let me have another bike, bu she does let me borrow my son's. When she dies she already knows that her insurance money is going for another bike.

Photo-sensitive windshields might not be the smartest idea in the world, especially in areas where they have tunnels. Of late our state has passed a law forbidding dark tinting to car windows. The thinking being that drug dealers and those who would blow a cop away cannot be seen through dark windows. Our state worries a lot about cops and public officials. "Capital Murder" is only applicable if one kills a cop or a public official. Why they are more valuable than the rest of us, I have no clue.

Why do we need windshilds at all?
Why a Monitor attached to a Wide angle Infra red cum regular camera is not replacing the Wind shilds with the help of Opeque Poly Panels ? :hammer:
