    Mo Jalie Ray Tracing

    Hi:

I am looking for info on "Mo Jalie" ray tracing for use with ophthalmic lens design. I have a table entitled Mo Jalie Ray Trace Sequence that contains computed data for evaluating the optical performance of a +3.00 Rx. However, I am not familiar with the Mo Jalie model. Can someone describe the geometry and math involved? I like to be able to vary basic lens parameters and see their impact on performance. Even more so, as a wana-be lens designer, I would like to learn more about this design method.

Any and all help would be most appreciated.

    Thanks,

    eyesguy

Mo is certainly the guru of ophthalmic lenses. He recently did some work for Essilor's Varilux University in Europe and I believe that they produced a CD with his ray tracing and lens design calcs. I am not sure if it is available but it might be worth contacting them.

    Regards
    David

The ray tracing sequence in my interactive Excel spreadsheet, OpticsLite, is based upon Mo Jalie's ray tracing methods. Essentially, I laboriously translated his various formulas into Excel expressions. (Mr. Jalie was kind enough to also verify the accuracy of the calculations for me.) Since I entitled the ray trace calculations in the spreadsheet, "Mo Jalie Ray Trace Sequence," I suspect that your table of data was produced using my spreadsheet. It is available for download here on the OptiBoard. The mathematics are pretty involved, and not something that can easily be described in a posting. But feel free to download the spreadsheet and see them in practice.

    Best regards,
    Darryl

Here's the direct link to Darryl's excellent spreadsheet. You'll need Microsoft Excel to run it.
