Whats the Best Advice you ever recieved

So Im driving to work today and I come across a song on the radio being sung by, I believe< Randy Travis. And the Chorus was some advice He got from his dad about life.

Never sell your saddle, never owe another man
watch where you spit on a windy day and dont use words you dont understand
Find the Lord before you need Him
    and never lose your pride
never sell your saddle cause lifes a long hard ride

So it got me to thinking: Whats the best advice I ever got. I can honestly say after much reflection, that I have learb\ned most of my lessons the hard way. My dads only advice was "Dont have kids" and having kids was the BEST thing Ive ever done. So Im wondering, whats the best advice you all have ever recieved?

From my mother: " To thine own self be true. " And yes I know this had an earlier famous source.

Other good advise from the sayings of Poor Richard (Ben Franklin).

Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.

The entire rest of the sayings in Poor Richard's almanac.

First rule of the optical business: Trust no one.
Second rule of the optical business: The doctor is always right.

My dad always says "overcome and adapt". I used to really hate that one...too military and kind of scary as a kid. He also says "don't ever let people know what you know how to do or what you will do...you will be doing it and probably hating it" Mom always says "when God closes a door he will open a window". Or my personal favorite " this too shall pass" that one gets me through my day always.

Do the best you can and don't sweat the small stuff. Also treat everyone you meet like you would like to be treated.

Never pee on someones boot and try to tell them it's raining.

Never start something you can't finish.

Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer.

God gave you a brain so use it.

That's the advice that's always stuck with me.

"A fool will lose tomorrow looking back to yesterday." (okay, that's Dionne Warwick, but its true nevertheless)

"Nice and easy" (from my grandpa when I was reeling in a fish, but it applies to a lot of situations in life)

"No matter where you work, it'll be the same people with different names." (thanks dad, you were right)

"Don't say anything to someone who is talking behind someone's back to you... rest assured they'll be talking behind yours later."

"Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt." (if only I could follow this advice more often)

A piece of advice that I've never been able to take to heart is "Never trust anybody but yourself." I think that might qualify as advice that is wise, but not necessarily good...

PS- I believe "To thine own self be true" is from Hamlet?

My daughter came home with this one the other day and it is so true

"NEVER LET LATER BE TO LATE"

    and another one I like

"TO BE EARLY IS TO BE ON TIME, TO BE ON TIME IS TO BE TO LATE, TO BE LATE IS TO BE UNTHINKABLE"

An old mentor told us 30 years ago when we came back from the front after helping a rather ravishing young barely clad young lady, "don't S*** where you eat!" was rather crude, but effective.

Will Rogers said, " to be successful, all you need is to 'know what you're doin'; like what you're doin', and believe what you're doin'."

Best lesson was from my dad.........

We grew up with a long driveway that was lined by maple trees and in the fall I had to make sure that the leaves were raked every day before pop rolled in from work. One day I thought to myself "Why rake the leaves they are only gonig to be there again tomorrow? "
Well that went over like a lead balloon as I tried to explain my theory to the old man he stopped me in mid sentance and said something that I will never forget.
"Well son, If that is how you feel answer me this.......Why wipe your a** if you know that you are going to S**T again?"
To this day I take that to thought on every task. :D
Life is short and good advice is priceless.......

    Short but sweet,

Treat others how you like to be treated (S & M fetishists excluded, of course).

Be prepared to listen, not just hear.

    10 Pence,

"It's cold out here because I now live in a cardboard box on the moon."

Would that be the bright side or the dark side? :)

    ?

I am still not finished evaluating this proverb

    EVERY PROVERB IS HALF TRUTH

Does it apply to it self ?
Help me what it means to say either Yes or No to this Q.

Well if I always lie, then by saying that I always lie I'm telling the truth, right? Except it can't be the truth because I always lie! ;)

    Now I'm confused...

Think it must be the time difference over the Atlantic or something!

Once a knight always a knight, but once a night is enough.
