OK, so I know that I won't be able to name my newest grandchild. My son will do the honors, but let's hear it for your suggestions. First get some background on the family. My son's name is Robert Lawrence. We call him Larry. My daughter-in-law is Traci Lynn. First child a daughter is Paula Lynn. Other names in their immediate family are:
Robert Eugue - Paternal grandfather
Diane Marie - Paternal grandmother
Charles Roy - Maternal grandfather
Jackie Lynn - Maternal grandmother
Charles Walter -Uncle
Darlene Marie - Aunt
Charles Roy - Uncle
Terry (?) - Uncle
Joan - Aunt
Allison - Aunt
Joseph Robert - Cousin
Sarah Marie - Cousin
Dylan - Cousin
Russell - Cousin
Kayla - Cousin
Erin - Cousin

We don't know if it's a girl or boy. Obviously I don't know the middle names of the cousins and aunts and uncles on the mother's side. I should ask. We don't need repeats of cousins names. They're all too close. The parents are good Southern Baptists. (Not that it matters for names, but it could).

Traci was the one who didn't want to know the sex of the baby, so Larry actually gets to name it, but some of the names he's come up with scare me. So help.

I promise to let you know as soon as the event occurs, and the name and stats. :) :) :)

Diane (Am I really this old?) Drake

My sons names are Grayson and Garrison. I love both names. I also Like Peyton (as in Peyton Manning)
As for a girl, I would have picked Druchette (from a Victor Hugo Novel) and probably lost a fight with my wife.

Diane,

I'm surpirsed at you! The choice is obvious:

Steve if a boy

and

Stephanie if a girl

Not only do you get a great name, but since there's no Steve or Stephanie in your family, no one will feel hurt because you chose to name the child after someone else in the family! :D

Steve would be a good name, but alas, I have a brother named Steve. Sorry, the family is too large to mention them all. Anyway, Steven was a great man in the New Testament.

I'm definitely going to share the names with my son. If we have a name history, as well that would be a great thing. Adds to the impact of the name. :)

I wonder how many children born after November will be named Chad after our ballot difficulties. With all of the fellows named Charles in their family they could actually get a way with it.

Scratch the previous thought; if the poor kid ended up being born with dimples he would be tortured for life.

This is why I have pets instead of children.

One of our first considerations for a boy's name was Joshua Caleb (after the two good spies- they were the only ones who made it to the Promised Land). We ended up naming our son after me (blush, blush :) ). Actually, my wife didn't want to know the gender of our firstborn- but I just "had" to know... So, I found out at 6 months and kept it a secret. We named our daughter after her paternal grandmothers (which received no objection from my wife, surprisingly- guess she liked Sara Marie).

I always wanted a girl named Jo, but that was a "slap name." As in, my wife would slap me every time I mentioned it... Solid Biblical girl names are: Deborah, (my wife's name, coincidentally), Rebecca, or Rachel.

Above all else, though- PLEASE don't let your son name the poor lass Brittany! Wouldn't want her to be remembered as a no talent teenage airhead!

Good Luck,
Walter Raymond Hanlin, Jr. (Petie)
PS- The above is my name as it appears on my birth certificate.

Don't call it Maria unless you want people to sing the following songs every single day for the rest of her life.
The sound of music - I've just met a girl called...,
West side story - Maria,
That one by Blondie,
The hymn 'Ave Maria' (and I've never met anyone who can hit the high note),
and recently Beck has done one as well.
To save Darris Chambless the bother of posting, I will suggest you call the child 'Darris Chambless', regardless of the sex.
Or how about a nice English name like Edward, or Jack, or Kate?

Hey, I still like "SPOT". After all, Grandkids are like puppies. They eat and sleep, they eat and pee, They etc, etc. Or maybe you could call the baby "W".

Maria is absolutely correct!

No one in your family is named Darris and since it's such a unisex name it's perfect. Not to mention I would no longer be the only one in the universe :-)

With that said I realize that your grandchild may not be named Darris but it is the worlds most androgonous name :-)

Take care,

Darris C.

You could do what Mrs Chambless did all those years ago, and just make one up..... :)

Hey Steve I couldn't agree with you more!!! :) Afterall, what better name could you have come up with??? Of course you probably knew I would have something to say about this sooner or later. My dad's name is Steve so if I had been a boy that would have been my name also. I am sticking with you Steve if a boy Stephanie if a girl.
Stephanie :)

Well, my first child (a girl) is named Kelsee Jordan. When we started looking at names for this one I was hoping to find a good family name. Unfortunately, the list looks like this:
Effie Melissy
Effie Maude
Bernice
Elsie
Need I go on? Beautiful family names just don't run on either side of the family. We found out at Thanksgiving that this baby will also be a girl. We have settled on Sarah Aimee for this one.

Let us know what the winning name for the grandbaby is. Best wishes to your family.

Carol: Try Caroline, it's beautiful and all the women I have known named this were too.

So what's wrong with establishing a family name? We did, generations ago:
Great-grandfather-David B. Mitchell
Grandfather-David E. Mitchell
Father-David A. Mitchell
Brother-David J. Mitchell
2nd cousin-David G. Mitchell
3rd cousin-David M. Mitchell
Nephew-Raymond David Gumbleton
Son-Benjamin David Canty
While my husband thinks we're nuts, it means we only have to choose one name and we don't offend anyone. At the last family reunion, 7 were still with us. Alas, we lost my Grandpa at age 96 in a car accident.
