Does anyone remember a character from a story that was extremely shy or timid? I'm looking for a puppy name...

"Santa" finally gave in to the many requests for a dog (or, as my son put it on his Christmas list: "I want a dog, NOT a toy dog, either- a REAL dog"). Did I mention that was the only thing on the kid's list this year?

Anyway, after many trips to the local shelter, Santa finally found a puppy he thinks he can live with... Cute little Sheltie-looking 6 month old male. The best word to describe the little guy's personality is "shy," which set me to wondering about a name.

Otherwise, I figured we might name him after the current election... My wife and I came up with: Chad, Cheney, Harris, Stylus, Broward, Dade, Colin, Dubya, or Bushy...

I look forward to your suggestions (my son has said he wants his dog's name to be "Spike," which isn't going to fit this little guy at all).

    Pete

I remember reading a "Little Golden Book" to my kids when they were little called "The Pokey Little Puppy." So how about Pokey, with the accompanying book?

    Hey Pete,

After my suggestion no one else need respond because I have once again outdone myself and come up with the perfect name for the lads dog. Try this on for size "Tex". It's the perfect name for any animal as well as any human. I believe every animal as well as every newborn from here on out should be named "Tex". It would sure simplify everything :-)

We Texans are shy, quiet AND completely loveable (as well as adorable :-) Not to mention my grandmother had a Sheltie named "Tex" and he was a pretty cool dog. She also had a Carin Terrier name Bill William (don't ask me why because I really don't know)

Well, that should pretty much take care of that. "Tex" it is then.

Anytime you need a little help with these things don't hesitate to ask. I'm here for ya Big Guy :-)

When I was little, I had a book called 'Rufus Round and Round'. It was about a Yorkie that, erm, went round and round. I don't know why, it just liked to. But anyway, the dog, Rufus, was very cute. Or you could call it Tim, after the dog in the famous five. Or be sarcatic, and call it Butch, or Rambo, or Tyson or something. Or Ubu, after that TV company. The world is your oyster.

I've changed my mind. Call it Mr Tumnus, after the faun in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. That's shy. It's afraid of the White Witch.

    Thumbs up

    Dear Pete,
I think your son was right.Spike is a great name.We lost Spike the wonder dog this year and its going to be some lonesome carving the prime rib this Monday.Don't worry about his shyness. His environment will lead him out of that.Congrats on your 8 pointer. My brother Keith got a 12 pointer last year that dressed out at 225.Which reminded me of another name for those which all hunters let pass unmolested."Skippy" Have fun with the new member of your family whatever you call him! Xmas greetings from the Cape and best wishes from.

    Pete,
The shy little guy needs confidence. Give him a name with true character and strength. The name could make all the difference, and maybe he won't remain shy for long. Maximillion, shortened to Max for the sake of the child.

By the way, Shelties tend to be a little bit on the yapping side. ;)

    Hello EyeManFla,

You are absolutely right. How could I have been so absentminded and omit two of the most important virtues we Texans have. Did I mention how great we are? ;)

    Hey Again Pete,

Diane is absolutely right. "Tex" would be a great name for the puppy. It gives confidence to the dog while being all that stuff that I (and EyeManFla ;) said about the virtues of Texans.

Diane said "Maximillion, shortened to Max for the sake of the child." Huh? See what I mean? Since Tex is short for Texan or Texas it goes right along with what Diane said :)

So the general consensus is that "Tex" will be the name of the puppy :) It's got pizzazz, flare and character :) I can't say enough good things about "Tex". I feel like I know him already. Why, the name says it all :)

There is one shy character in historic literature that I can think of...and he has a long nose. Cyrano de Bergerac.
I also stumbled across "a timid soul" from a cartoon series done in the early 1900's by a guy named Harold Tucker Webster...The character is known as Caspar Milquetoast. (Tucker or Webster also sound like good dog names)
I polled my fellow employees and everyone came up with Peobody.
    Good luck!

How about "Dammit"? That's what we always called the un-trained puppies when they had been left alone for more than a few minutes!

What does a Sheltie look like? Incidently, dogs called 'Tex' are tall, light brown mongrels with a cheeky face and a red bandanna tied round their neck. A bit like Tramp off Lady and the Tramp. They are not small and yappy. Why don't you call it Milhouse, after Bart's friend. He's small and shy. Also, it could be a business op.
    "What's your dog called?"
    "Milhouse!"
"But the real Milhouse wears glasses, and your dog doesn't"
"Well, I'm making him some in MY SHOP"
    "You have an opticians?"
    "Yes"
"I need some glasses. Here's $2000. Make me some."

And all because you called the dog Milhouse!
Beat that Darris. Milhouse just made Pete $2000. Let's see what 'Tex' can do.

Those are REALLY cute. They look like little Lassie dogs. Don't call it Lassie though, it's far too obvious (and girly). They don't look like Tex dogs at all. They look like Milhouses to me.

Actually, I thought of Milhouse too! I gotta admit, I had to think for a few minutes to come up with Bart's friend's name (I knew it started with "M," but I couldn't get "Melvin" out of my mind... I just this morning remembered "Milhouse" as I was shaving- nasty nick).

Anyway, we've also thought of "Piglet," and "Lion" (after the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz). Coincidently, the lady at the humane society (after all, though it looks like a Sheltie, our new puppy is a mutt) is from the U.K. She kept complaining about all the small print on her forms, until she finally said "I need someone to make me some new glasses" (no lie, she actually said that to ME). Needless to say, she has an appointment in January...

I have to agree with your kid, "SPIKE" is a great name for a puppy. I have a pure black Chow, that can look pretty scary at times, and her name is "Precious" My daughter picked her out and she was just a little ball of fluff, and she named her. When the dog grew up, the name didn't really fit, but what the heck. Jim Seebach

    Hello Everyone,

I wish to address Maria's challenge to top her dog naming and financial gain story. Well, you know me, always up for a challnge so here goes ;-)

To defend the name "Tex" as the perfect dogs name even for financial gain the story goes something like this. By naming the Dog "Tex" you get two pluses. First you know from the name alone that the dog is a Republican (and conservative which Pete will like ;-) Second since the dog is Republican AND named "Tex" you can deduce that he owns or probably will own an oil company, since we all know that only Republicans own oil companies and benefit politically from oil money :-) So by naming the puppy "Tex" he will be worth millions and therefore be priceless :-)

Since Millhouse will only garner a meger $2000.00 I say Fe to Penache :-)

Pete, love Safilo!! Cool name. I like Milhouse too. Safilo is great though because everyone (but us and other optical people) will wonder where you came up with it.
    Good luck!!
