  • Boxing Day

An email from Chip made me realise that, although this will be my 24th Boxing Day, I have no idea what it means. Does anyone have the faintest clue?

This is the day when folks take down all their Christmas decorations and put them in "BOXES" and then store them away in the attic until the following year.

Actually, Boxing Day is from the 18th Century. Once a year, every year, friends of the great composer Joahanne Sabastiian Bach would gather together and sing hymns and carols. The major focus of the singing was to remember great songs that their late friend had written. The day was originally called "Bach Sing" day but over the years it has been shortened.

I thought it dated back further than that?

OK - This is what Ask Jeeves said about it. And, as everyone knows, Ask Jeeves is infallible.

26 December was traditionally known as St. Stephen's Day, after the first Christian martyr. It is now more commonly known as Boxing Day. This expression came about because money was collected in alms-boxes placed in churches during the festive season. This money was then distributed to the poor and needy after Xmas.

It is thought the Boxing Day was first observed in the Middle Ages. It found renewed popularity in the 19th Century when the lords and ladies of England presented gifts in boxes to their servants on 26 December in appreciation of the work they had done over the Xmas celebrations.

If 26 December falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Boxing Day takes place on the Monday.

          Not in England, it doesn't!

In addition to being Boxing Day, December 26th is my Wedding Anniversary. My wife and I like to keep major holidays and events close together (our birthdays are one day apart too.)

Hummm...I always though it was called boxing day because we use to beat the crap out of the kids in the neighborhood who got better toys than we did!
