    Sunglasses Hall of Fame

Hey all, wanted to open a thread on iconic sunglasses. What is your input on everything sunglasses made famous. For example, what celebrities do you feel put sunglasses on the map. What styles were branded classics by whom or what movies, celebs, eras, events, etc, put certain styles or sunglasses in general. Open to all kinds of discussion on what comes to mind! Here is what comes to mind for me:

    Jackie O
    Elvis
    Janis Joplin
    Bono

    Blues Brothers
    Risky Business
    Top Gun

There is a few to get started. Curious to see everyone's input ;)

As far as Sunglass styles themselves go...

The field can be narrowed to three, IMHO:

    1. Ray-Ban Wayfarer
    2. Porsche Design 5621 Aviator
    3. Oval/Round/P3 (John Lennon).

    My all-time favs....what are yours?

    Pilots...

American Optical's AOfg58 Skymaster with paddle temples. Popular with pilots 'cuz you can take them on and off w/o removing your helmet.

Hey, what about the Persol 649 guys? They've been made since the 50s and there still hasn't been a frame to come close to their design. Not to mention their Meflecto (R) arms which are amazing.

Sure the Wayfarer had Cruise and countless others-- but the 649's got Marcello Mastroianni, Francis Ford Coppola, and Mr. Cool Steve McQueen (he also used the re-released folding 714s). Plus, they're ENORMOUS in the 56 and 58 sizes.

I don't know who the SG are by, but I wouldn't argue with him that they aren't cool.

An interesting sidelight to the Wayfarer. B&L had made the decision to discontinue the Wayfarer in the early 80's due to lagging sales in zyl sunglasses (Vuarnet had captured a significant market share)and a very strong metal market. After the decision was made, the NBA playoffs were telecast. Jack Nicholson was on TV in Wayfarers every time the Lakers were telecast. (They went the distance) By the time the playoffs were finished, Wayfarers were on backorder and have stayed hot ever since!

That’s interesting since the Blues Brothers/Risky Business/Huey Lewis/etc all wore the Wayfarers exclusively in the early to mid 80’s

Perhaps I misspoke the date- maybe the late 70's....much brain damage that decade! Story was told to me by a former VP of B&L and he told me that in the early 80's because that's when I was in the process of launching a retail sunglass company (1983).

In 1980 when the Blues Bros. movie was released we had tons of people asking for the Blues Bros. sunglasses. Again in 1983 when Risky Business was released, we had people wanting Tom Cruise's sunglasses.

Really? My memory must be going. I've just done enough of them as sunglasses though, I kinda group them in anyway.

Was once available as plano sunglass, now I think only as opthalmic frame.
A word to the wise on this and similar frames. If you ever get an old one to mount new lenses in, loosen eyewire screw only. Under no circumstances ever loosen the screws that hold the plastic parts to the chassis. You will never the frame back together. The plastic shrinks and cannot be stretched enough to get the screw holes to line up again.

I still have my original Clubmaster pattern - the only Set -0 pattern I've ever seen. Have a 46 eye? Set the edger to 46.
