    Lens Feathering

We have an ongoing feud regarding feathering the front edge of a lens after edging. We have a new edger and the lenses are not sharp. I always feather the back edge.

    Any help?

Why would you even touch the front side of a lens after it comes off the edger? The backside yes, but the front............

If the edger is leaving no sharp edge, I wouldn't touch front or back.

A very, very light pin bevel on the front of minus lenses will help prevent chipping if you are inserting in a nylon string frame as you pull the string over the front of the lens. Otherwise no need too.

Why touch the front? if you have a plus high or high minus enough to leave a ledge on the front bevel you need to put a light bevel on it.

Over the years I have had my share of strong Rx's and I may of put a light pin bevel on the the front I do not recall, but yes I see the benefit of.
Now if you are concerned about chipping the edge of a grooved lens while inserting, personally I would be using a different lens material to keep that from happening and make sure it has a good safety bevel on the backside.

    Welcome to Optiboard!

Why the feud? Has someone been taught it must be done to both sides?

We routinely did this in the days when the dodo bird was still alive on glass because of small chips that would be on both sides. It prevented breakage when heat tempering. Is the someone who's advocating it old school- or mentored by one?

I've always done both sides on the hand stone, it takes like 10 seconds.

Yes, there is someone that insists this be done but only because of a law suit! Insists that lenses could cut someone's face. We have a brand new edger. The lenses are not sharp!
This person has an Optician license and I do not. I am the manager here and the 2 Opticians that are here disagree.

Well I guess if you want to establish the pecking order you should challenge him to explain how the outer edge of a lens can cut your face.

Stick up for the other opticians who only pin bevel the inside.

I would also challenge him to find a case where any optician was sued for this. Inside bevel perhaps- but it's inconceivable how the outer edge presents a hazard.

Lawsuits are routinely settled before ever going to a judge and jury and as I've said before you should carry adequate insurance for the store and worry much more about a slip and fall than something related to the eye wear.
