    Specialty Golf Lenses

I had a patient come in today saying that she had heard there was a new lens out for golfers where the lens was single vision distance with a thumbprint add on the temporal side in the periphery. She said this was so that the golfer could check their score but not have the reading power in the way when actually golfing. Has anyone heard of this and if so, what company manufactures them?

.....................that is old hat, and used in the optical for half a century.

Use the old Kryptok bifocal mounted upside down, either to the right or left corner depending on users choice in the right or left top corner of the glasses,
so it will not conflict with the shooting of the ball.

+1 They work well. Assume they can be done with other sports too. (like biking?) Just be sure to use a poly or trivex material as needed.

Multifocals do not always have to be located in the traditional location. Think outside the box. We frequently fabricated this eyewear for shooting sports, in particular skeet and traps. A lot of anglers like the add in a non typical location.

I personally wear a PAL and decrease my add , use a short and set it low. works for seeing the card.

My auto mechanic has a pair of safety glasses with progressive lenses upside down. Just what he needs when working under a vehicle on the lift.

I know how to "make my own", I just wanted to know if there was a company that actually manufactured what I described above. My patient was sure of it. She said she saw a commercial.

How would what you describe be any different than a round seg rotated to the temporal periphery?

As far as I know, it wouldn't be. I was searching for a brand name as per a patient's request.

Definity may not be new but it is certainly still used for this application.

We like the Shamir Golf better so that is our go-to and we are very successful with it.
Have I told you today how much I hate poly?

What are the benefits of the Shamir Golf as you would describe to a potential wearer?

Ease of wear. The wearer can comfortably see the ball without any weird head angling. My tech has worn both styles so I usually let him give his first hand account if possible.

Blue Jumper The days are gone were an optician ................................

The days are gone were an optician would sell some lenses he found were the perfect solution for a problem or a way to go.

These days you sell a brand name that is advertised by the manufacturer to the public on all corners. That opens the territory to anybody who wants to sell a product, including one liners.

That response is very disappointing. I'm sorry you see the people who are on here sharing ideas and asking questions to grow and learn as such mindless brand-driven suckers. Too bad furthering options and advancements in technology are always to take from the patient and put more money in the hands of those who don't care at all about the people they serve.

I'm feel very fortunate I believe in my colleagues and the practice I help run. Otherwise, I would have quit long ago and moved into a stagnant industry that is happy with 'good enough.'

Don, why do you decrease the add?

Mainly to reduce any distortion when looking down at the ball. I'm not worrying about reading fine print. I just want to see the card even if I have to tip my head back a little and it's usually a bright day which helps even more.....unless i'm playing with Stevie Wonder who usually likes to play at night.

Ah...that makes a little more sense to me now. I thought you were using the near to view the scorecard, but you're mainly using it as an intermediate to see the ball better. So, what's Stevie's handicap?
