    Solar Eclipse May 20, 2012

We will be driving up to Page, AZ on Sunday to see the solar eclipse.

    Screen Shot 2012-05-11 at 10.50.54 AM.jpg

I am excited about this because it will be the first full solar eclipse I have ever seen. Anyone else making the effort to see this? Here's the link to the eclipse's path: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogl...20Agoogle.html

We will only get a partial here, but I'll still try for a few shots of it.

Depends on where. For instance it should be around 6:30 pm in Page, AZ.

We had one in VA when I was about 9 or 10 years old. We made oatmeal pinhole boxes so we could view it without looking directly at it. In fact, there were many admonitions from the teachers not to look directly at it. Of course, I tired of the oatmeal box pretty quickly and looked directly at it. And I can still see as long as I have my glasses on.

Have fun- these things are really special. The talking heads were reporting that people were coming from all over the world to see ours.

I believe this one is actually an annular eclipse Steve - not total or "full" per se. Remember that the lunar orbit can vary between approx. 220,000 to 250,000 miles or so. This variation in the Moon's distance makes the apparent size of the lunar disc vary from our vantage point on the surface of the earth by 12-13% or so, and makes the difference in completely covering the solar disc...or not.

Regardless, it's an amazing thing to see, and definitely worth the drive. The wife and I are contemplating a day trip down from SLC to southern Utah to view as well. If you're going to Page, we can almost wave to each other. :) You should be right along the antumbral path - so great viewing if the skies cooperate. Enjoy, and remember your mylar glasses or sub-angstrom H-alpha filter!

    Bri~

Where in Utah will you be?

It is annular but that is actually better in my view. The moon will be slightly smaller than the sun creating a 'ring of fire'. I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I even broke out my 8" Celetron telescope yesterday which has a solar filter and it works great I could even see the sun spots. Not sure if we will be able to fit it in the van along with 6 people, a dog, chairs and all our assorted gear. We'll see.

I searched through my iTunes songs and pulled out the top 50 songs that had either the 'sun' or 'moon' in them and burned some CDs to listen to on the trip. Here's the list:

    Steve,

You left out "Fat Old Sun" by Pink Floyd...not to mention the entirety of The Dark Side of the Moon album!! Sacrilege! :)

We actually stayed up here in Salt Lake and just drove out to the old Saltair and watched it all unfold over the lake. Pretty dramatic clouds, and a decent enough view - if not truly annular from our vantage. We happened across an old Mylar balloon that had blown into the rocks of the jetty we were walking along. Abby, our daughter, thought it was pretty neat that she could actually see the cookie bite out of the sun through the balloon skin.

Did you get any photos? Our pinhole viewer wasn't projecting large enough to be worth much except naked eye.

That;s because I only used songs that I actually had and songs with Sun or Moon in the title.

I did get some pictures. Here's one:

LOVE THE PICS! But you left out "Eclipse" from DSoTM! By default, it's got both the sun AND the moon in it's title! ;) David Gilmour is seriously depressed you forgot about him, I just know it! ;)

I also forgot Johnny Cash's 'Ring of Fire' which would have been a perfect choice.

That seems very appropriate with that beautiful picture. Here in Texas we got to see it for a little bit, before the clouds covered it up. Was pretty amazing!
