Chris, You missed this one...
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss.—Essilor has strengthened its wholesale laboratory with the acquisition of Superior Optical, a mid-sized lab in Ocean Springs, Miss. that services customers throughout the Southeast. An Essilor spokesperson told VMail that the lens maker previously had an ownership stake in the lab, and recently acquired the remaining portion of the business. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Superior Optical was founded in 1990 by industry veterans Hal Walker, who served as president and Jon Jacobs, who served as vice president. Both have retired from the lab following the completion of the acquisition. Longtime employee Morgan Braley now heads the lab’s management team.
Vision Monday ranked Superior Optical as the 11th largest independent U.S. wholesale lab in its 2015 Top Labs Report, with Rx sales of $14.7 million and production of 850 Rx jobs per day. The lab had 123 employees as of August, 2015. - See more at: http://www.visionmonday.com/latest-n....Lht3aQ2K.dpuf
I for sure missed this one, and checked through the French presse releases which are usually the first to publish the latest news,
Did Superior Optical do any private work?
Brothers Optical in Southern California has been absorbed into the Borg collective.
Is it a monopoly yet?

It has not been public knowledge yet but they are the next to fall.
Congrats to the independents who allowed the Cotran brothers build it up again with you and then sell for the second time to them! Are you getting a piece of the action?
I still have not seen any official word on ICare in ST. Peteersburg but heard they where bought months ago by E as well.
Seems the US buyouts are not as public as the once where.
I was under the impression allaboutvision was always aligned with Essilor......
It's official now, U.S. Optical gone.

This is the way the map works; once any lab is a distributer for either product they give E first right of refusal to buy the business.
Deal is done at that point and the clock ticks until they want out with a formula in-place; think of this the next time you order a Varilux lens or a Crizal coating unless the lab is giving you back a piece when they sell out after working with independent ECP's.
Nice job if you can get it.
An Essilor spokesperson confirmed that the Cotrans will continue to manage US Optical.
This is the second major transaction between the Cotran brothers and Essilor. In 1999, the brothers sold Optogenetics, a Syracuse, N.Y. wholesale lab they founded in 1986, to Essilor.
Essilor is just protecting themselves so the brothers can not pull the same stunt a third time.
THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS A Q&A WITH US OPTICAL
Currently the third largest independent lab in the US, US Optical produces 1700 jobs per day. With 106 employees, US Optical prides itself in its 24 hour turnaround time on uncut lenses, calling itself, “The Fastest Lab in America.”
“US Optical is the largest supermarket of free-form lenses,” said Cotran. “We give ECPs endless choices. We have also invested in automation with five free-form generators, 12 digital polishers, four Zeiss AR machines, two Crizal and digital AR machines, and two MEI edgers—the fastest edgers in the world.”

However inevitable it was, my jaw still hit the floor when I saw this on my Google news feed.
Bartley Optical in Azusa California was acquired a few years back- they were private for over 30 years, I believe.
Essilor just purchased Midwest Labs in Schiller Park. It is a shame that they will be closing it in early 2019. It is more cost effective to have just a couple big labs then many small ones.
Goodbye Midwest Labs in Indianola IA. Essilor bought it, moved some of its lab production to Mexico (to help the lab be more profitable), then announced they are closing it in December. A lot of good people that have been working for that company for decades while it was independent, now have uncertain futures.
