    Question

I have a patient who is planning to go on a mountain climbing expedition. One of the required pieces of gear is a pair of "Glacier Glasses." I'm sure that these must be a face conforming frame with a deep tint that blocks 100% UV light, but perhaps there is an actual brand of glasses by that name?

    Thanks for the input,
    Pete

    Pete,

Glacier glasses are usually an avaitor style frame that has leather "side-sheilds". Basicly it cuts out all the light coming in from the side. Bolle makes one called the
"Glacier 8161" and Bucci makes several. Look in the sunglass section of the Frame Facts.

    Regards,

    Shane

    Pete,

    The bucci styles are the...

ALpine, K2, Climber, Siberan and the Yukon.
they range from 46 to a 58 eye. Good luck.

Pete, Polarizing is also a near must, white glare is the worst there is. Done a couple pair for an antartic trip, we also did a Zeiss Cool Blue Mirror with a back side ar. pt was so pleased.!

Pete, B & L made them years ago. I last saw one about 1990.

It was a nylon frame (as not to freeze to the scalp), had a glass lens (to avoid sratching from driven snow) was a G-15 tint but darker, and was a double bi-grad mirror to prevent snow blindness. It was not polarized. It did have leather side shields. Shape was not an aviator, but was a tear drop style.

    Don't know if that helps.

Another lens is similar, and that is the Serengeti Vermillion. I love it for harsh winter days... (and I can vouch for more than a few of those).

Thanks for the info! I'll contact the company that is running the expedition to ascertain to which eyewear they refer.

Pete, Vuarnet also made glacier glasses and probably still do, although I've not heard much about them since I left the sunglass biz. They were also nylon but almost round in shape with leather sideshields and elastisised
cord to keep them on in an emergency female attack because you looked so cool :)

    Judy, you got it! (literally)

I had forgotten about the cable temples and the brow thang...

Don't recall them being polarized, but then you have a set, and I have 11 years since I've seen one.

Pete, you might want to check the darkness factor, most of B&L,s mirror coated glasses did not have g-15 lenses, but had g-31 lenses, as a g-15 covered with a mirror almost leaves nothing. I constantly run across people who dont understand, what g-15 means, and that its not a color ,but rather the light transmittance of that lens.

The RayBans I have here transmit about 9% of available light according to my handy dandy Digital Lightmeter 4000.

Julbo also has them. Both Vuarnet and Julbo are distributed in Canada by Lanctot.

"Because it's there", said Sir Edmund.

By the way, consider dark brown over grey or G-15; grey lenses, snow, and cloud cover make a very bad combination.

This type of glasses where sold in Europe since the times glasses were invented. Even the Eskimos had slotted ones. Here is an interesting one.
