    Question To the independent opticians:

    Do you carry malpractice insurance? Do you have to? Can you be held liable for malpractice?

    Yes, especially if fitting contacts. Must be insured.

    I've always had to have liability insurance, I believe it increased from 1 million to 2 million last year. I've worked under an OD for the past 3 years and all the staff are covered by blanket liability insurance.

    You have to have it ......

    in order to participate in 3rd Party insurance plans, and at least the 2 I participate in require 2 Million. Its pretty cheap for us as straight opticians, because the losses are minimal. When you are associated with an OD I imagine the cost rises.
