Of course heat related defects are more likely in our hot months,
I do see a lot of this in the summer here. Tourists leave their eyewear in the car, or worse, on a blanket at the beach. Many times I hear how "it just happened". I agree, not the only cause, but more than we might think.

    Windex! Bad for lenses!!

I have seen the slow etch caused by using glass cleaners on plastic lens hardcoats and AR.

One of my inlaws eyewear suddenly "hazed". He had cleaned his lenses daily for about 18 months with windex. This was a high end premium lens with what was considered a top hard coat. You could see the cleaning pattern, a perfect etch, looked like fritted glass.

The others I saw had the classic breakdown of the AR top coats, big area, center of the lens turning hazy, with a distinct circular cleaning pattern.

I was told it is from the ammonia in the glass cleaners that causes the break down of the coatings.

Use good old Dawn, a few drops per oz in a spary bottle does the trick. Rinse well before and after spraying on the cleaner, dry with soft cloth.

:DWe in Canada, despite the popular belief that we all live in igloos and ride skidoos to work, have much the same climate conditions as most of the northern US states.

I've seen clients return from holidays in hot climates with crazed lenses- and I've also seen one particular client with the habit of wearing her glasses on top of her head, repeatedly 'bake' her lenses.

Windex contins methanol (alcohol) which is a solvent. Solvents are called this name because they do dissolve a lot of stuff besides dirt...........................they also preserve former living tissue.

The run of the mill lens cleaner is, I said this before, 70-75% water and 20% to 25% ISP (Isopropyl alcohol). Again the solvent eating away at your coating even if they are called AR cleaners.

If you would spend a little more for a surfactant (soap) based cleaner you would not incur damage, but also make more money selling it over the counter as a safe product for AR coated lenses.

Funny that is why my husband says he looks so good. Alcohol which preserves him!! It's not Windex he is using though.....:D

Well, when I go back to the office to work, on occasion, I will tell everyone to use 1. Mild Detergent, 2. Soft Cloth, 3. Make sure the glasses are wet, and I WON'T suggeset Windex. Wonder what everyone will say??

How can Kimwipes be safe for lenses? Its made from wood. I was always told that if it's made from wood, don't use it.

Had a patient bring in a pair of glasses today asking why the AR coating is coming off. I asked what she is cleaning it with, she says.."Rubbing alcohol".

Urban myth. Wasn't true in 2004 when this thread started, isn't true now.

Redhot Jumper This must be the Friday joke....................................

This must be the Friday joke or an advance 1st of April one. This thread is about 10 years old long before all the slick coats became fashionable and edKendance still had the first picture he was running for years and the kid never grew up.

This is the fourth huge bump. Popular subject though. BTW, the only comment that really caught my attention was the homemade cleaning solution with one third alcohol.

    Old Threads:
Sometimes it's good to review old threads and re-take courses or to take courses that you think are beneath your level. How many times have you told yourself: "I knew that!" But you also have to admit that you didn't think to use it the last time you needed it.
