    Question

I have been pondering this one for about 2 years now.

How do you write or type a date for an invoice?

As an example, if you use 10/01/01, does this date represent Oct. 01, or Jan. 10?

    Or say it is 02/07/01?

Is that 2001, or 2002, and which month?

I ask, as this will become an issue down the road regarding warranties and validity of rx date.

When I write a contact file, I write: Jan. 17/I. Last year was 2K, next year will be II; but still It must go into the 'puter as actual digits.

Any thoughts? Should there be an industry standard the doc's use when writing the date in numeric form to avoid confusion?

Since I got the internet, I have noticed Americans just put the numbers in any which way. So the third day of February in the year 2001 can be 03/02/01,02/03/01, 01/02/03, etc etc.
This is clearly an evil plot to confuse foreigners. But now it has backfired! :)
In England, it is ALWAYS day/month/year, or else no-one knows what you're on about.
I think the American adoptation of our date writing will be the first, irreversible step in the reinstation of British rule. And I bagsy Chief of Hawaii.

Maria, if one were to verbally ask a Brit the date, would the answer be 17th of January or January 17th? I think we have another way of saying "bagsy".If you mean that you claim Hawaii for yourself, it is said "hosey"If we are in fact to return to the Crown, I hosey Hampton Court Palace.
    With

    on 17/01/01, from an anglophile.
    (Edited to capitalize Crown)

You would say 'the seventeenth of January'. And while we're at it, you say the time funny as well. What time is 'twenty of eight'? Is that twenty past eight or twenty to eight? Here, the rule (again unbreakable) is that if it is between half past and o'clock, it is (x) minutes to (the next hour). If it is between o'clock and half past, it is (x) minutes past (the preceding hour).
I didn't really explain that very well.
You can have Hampton Court! Hope you like Japanese tourists taking pictures of you.

Concerning dates (and time), if you are U.S. military-trained, you may very well be accustomed to day-month-year, and the 24 hour clock. Personally I (and my computer) prefer the 24 clock for scheduling. When telling someone else the time, I hate the "ofs" and just use "til" or "after". (Time can be such a volatile subject: My husband and I are still arguing over whether this is the first year of the millenium, or the 2nd, and he knows I am not happy about the concept of "zero".)
I am having some difficulty "thinking in other time zones" for Optiboard purposes. This may have more to do with my usual lack of sleep, typically posting between 0100 and 0200 EST. Today I can actually tell what's out my window as I post this!
Maria, if you get Hawaii, may I still visit?

Wish we did - at least they'd sort properly.

    I often use the 17-Jan-01 (or 17-Jan-2001) notation - it's unambiguous.

    What time is "half eight"?

Perhaps we could go back to the old naval system and use 8 bells. Of course those bloody limeys would probably comprehend that, if not in a proclivical sense then certainly in a propensical sense. But then again what can one expect from some chap who drives on the wrong side of the road. God save the queen, aye some one needs to.

We moved a bit from the point of the discussion.

Is there and should there be a 'standard' way for the doc's to write the rx date?

If you have legislation in place that you cannot use an out of date rx for say, contact lenses, and you get a script reading: 01/08/03 and it is the year 2004, is the rx valid?

I ask this as it will become a 'problem', akin to the Y2K issue.

    Half-eight is 8.30, or 20.30 if you're being posh.
We do drive on the wrong sde of the road, because here you have to do the gear stick with your left hand, and I'm sure it would be easier with your right.
Harry - are you being English there, or what?
Jenny - of course you can still come to Hawaii. I may even arrange a small discount on the entry fee :) . But please note, all Japanese camera-wielding sightseers will be detained at the Mariapalace (formerly customs) for asset-stripping. ;)
