    index 1.60 MR8

    I am writing to inquire about material 1.60 index MR8. We are considering adding this material to our lab’s offerings and I would like to learn more about its advantages and disadvantages.

    Specifically, I am interested in knowing the following:

    * What are the advantages of MR8 over other materials such as CR39, polycarbonate, Trivex, and 1.74 index?
    * How does MR8 compare to these other materials in terms of scratch resistance?
    * Is it mandatory to apply hardcoat to MR8?
    * What is the minimum center thickness that can be edged in MR8?
    * Is MR8 recommended for grooving or drilling?
    * Does MR8 chip easily?
    * Can MR8 be tinted to dark densities?

    I would appreciate any other information you can provide me about this material.

    Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

    The MR8 material as launched was to be an improvement over the MR6. The index of refraction was slightly increased as was the Abbe # and UV400 was achieved. The new 1.6 was ideal for drilling and grooving. This is a good overall material that subs for poly without the softness, chemical sensitivity, and warp factor of low powers. I have seen labs produce low powers very thin, with success.
