Has anyone else encountered or heard about this claim?

I recently had a conversation with a colleague from a different laboratory. She mentioned that a representative told her that certain types of anti-glare coatings on specific lenses could potentially invalidate their safety rating. Personally, I'm not entirely sure which types she's referring to, as this is the first time I've come across this information. It sounds a bit dubious to me, as an anti-reflective coating shouldn't compromise the material integrity of a lens. Has anyone else encountered or heard about this claim?

This is totally correct AR coating reduces the impact resistance of the lens material. Every batch of lenses that come out of a AR chamber should be drop ball tested for impact resistance.

That explains the dings I've been seeing on my jobs recently.

Oh well, as long as no one goes blind.

You do not have to test every lens. Usually a test lens is part of the run and if that passes drop ball you are good to go. Records are required to show who performed the test along with some other Permanante information.
