    New coatings UV protection

    Hello,
On the market there are anti-reflection coatings that cut the UV instead of the usual dye
I ordered a set on Transitions and I reckon it didnt react as well , my supplier said it should have, perhaps I don't understand the Tech but UV bloc on top of Transitions sound like trouble to me.
    am I wrong?
    Thanks!
    Alan

    This is a good question.

I remember that the UV scare was about back side reflecting surface; that is--AR coated lenses were bouncing more UV back to the face/eye than uncoated lenses were. (Somehow.)

So...is the UV block a separate procedure applied to back surface only?

It is. It is specifically designed to keep UV from bouncing off the backside of the lens and into the eye. It has no impact on the function of photochromic lenses.

(It's also a solution to a problem that barely exists.)

It's a problem the vision "insurance" companies are all too happy to charge more money for of course. They love crap like that. 10 bucks here, 15 bucks there...death by a thousand cuts.

YOU MEAN THAT THIS DOESN'T ELIMINATE UV RAYS FROM ENTERING THE EYE? And the UV coatings aren't going to prevent cataracts?

I've heard for my 15+ years working in the industry wear sunglasses--they help protect against cataracts. At some point when patients are close (within a couple years) to getting them out, and their vision is completely deteriorating (you've had to double their rx and it improved their VA by a line or less) do you ever consider telling them go stand out in the sun for an hour a day without sunglasses on? Would it be akin to what my parents did to me when I was 5 by sending me over to my cousin's house who had chicken pox?

UV rays like light comes from all directions.

Clear AR treatments cannot totally block UV rays

UV back AR treatments prevent UV reflected back from the lens from reflecting into the eye (light comes in every direction)

The main UV blocking of the lens is given by the material (mr for example) or additional treatments

UV AR are an improvement to have less UV in the eye

I don't think the initial question has been answered?
If you whack on an anti-reflection coating that cuts the Uv on top of the transitions coat will it stop the lens reacting?
unless it has and I've missed it
(I cry a lot these days!)

I answered it in post #3 above. The UV component of AR/UV coatings is backside only, and does not affect the lenses' photochromic properties at all.

Ahh! Thank you! I missed that!
Can I please ask , when they are coated the back will be coated using a Mar with a uv bloc and the front will be without, is it possible that they could make a mistake and do a UV blocking mar on the front and back ?
    Thanks!!

No because the process for hard coating, UV, and mar Is different
