    give me the words to convince my clinic we need a manual lensmeter

    I just started at a new clinic and we only have an autolensmeter. I am not a fan. I've been in optical for 18 years and this is the first time I do not have a manual lensmeter. I am much more comfortable trouble shooting and verifying lenses in a manual. I find the auto varies so much and it is difficult with progressives, prism and all those technical things we use to assure ourselves we are providing the quality patients deserve. The owners are optometrists and I am a licensed optician. Thanks for any help!

    There.. I just copied what you requested. You could add how a manual can confirm (reject) what an auto “says”.

    Go with what you wrote above.

    Yes your own words are great. Also, they might just be under the assumption that an autolensometer is an improved digital version of the traditional lensometer. Tell them an autolensometer is a rapid screening tool to discern a pt's historical Rx, while a manual lensometer is the precision diagnostic tool for verification and troubleshooting.

    Screening =/= diagnostic. Excellent.

    Automatic Lensmeters

    The best optical lens measuring instrument was the B&L Vertometer.
    No longer made, they can be found used, sometimes in good condition.
    I repair the instrument as well as supplying repair parts.
    Unfortunately customers like to see state of the art, not old fashioned technology.
    Store managers like to see speed, not accuracy.
    Autolensmeters require less, if any training to use.
