    Lab Expertise Needed!

Recently we have been noticing the progressive markings causing distortion, prismatic effects or just in patients field of vision. We have noticed ourselves, they have recently been coming in more pronounced than in the past. I have been told conflicting information by the lab rep and the manufacture rep. Lab rep states those markings are put on by the manufacturer and the lab has no control of it. Manufacture rep states it's put on at the lab level and they can manipulate how pronounced they are at there. Can any of you lab experts shine some light on this for me? Thank you for your time and knowledge.

If they are old "front side" progressives(add power molded on the front, does anyone still use these?) then they are done at the blank manufacturer. If they are full backside designs then they are done at the lab. In the case of Camber lenses from IOT, there are both.

Engravings are tricky to get just right. There several reasons for the issues you are describing. First there two distinct ways to engrave one is mechanical and the other is with a laser. The lasers comes in a few variations each with its owns issues. Let’s not forget are we hardcoating over the engraving or will it be dip coated or spin coated both will give you different results with the same engraving. It really gets tricky with as an example cr39 sometimes it is hardcoated and sometimes not. Anther issue is when the lens is ground with decentration and one side is thicker than the other the laser will engrave deeper on the thicker side. Lots of fun running a lab. The lab should have a standard of acceptability and not just ship it and hope for the best.
