My sister has been dealing with corneal opacity from an implant after a vitrectomy (several years ago) where the implant last May slipped and cut her iris. The doc (an ophthalmologist) first thought it was retinal bleeding and only after a couple of days of increasing pain that made her physically ill (to the point of thinking she may die!) did a middle of the night phone call have the doc tell her to take a med that he said was only to be taken if he told her too (steroid?). A visit to the office first thing the next morning had him realize the blood was in the anterior chamber causing severe glaucoma.
After removing the blood a corneal viral infection set in and her cornea is slowly dying and looks like she will need a transplant, which she is reluctant to do, or other options such as contacts.
Her other MD, a corneal specialist, is also favoring the transplant so what are the pro's and cons of her options?
What timetable is she looking at as far as doing this? Is sooner rather than later best? And are there questions we should be asking before any procedure is done?
fwiw- I have a durable power of attorney and health care proxy for her as this happened a few weeks after her husbands funeral. (Talk about piling on!!!)
