    "Nights in White Satin"

...or, "I've got the Moody Blues".

We've been getting jobs back and it looks like they were inspected by Frosty the Snowman. All edges are suddenly unpolished in 2023.

When we talked to the lab, they told us that we must now specify edge treatment or...snowman.

We used to get an automatic satin edge polish on all our 1.586 and 1.67 (which is the Goldilocks of all edge polishes...not too frosty-cold, not too shiny-hot, just right!) and we didn't charge or get charged for this.

Talked again to the lab to have an automatic "code" put on our account to give us back our satin.

Question: is it not just a final step on an edger, on polycarb settings? It goes to a wheel or something and bingo?

You do select polish edge (or not) on most edgers. It does take more time to finish, time away from running another job on that edger. Maybe they should charge you extra…..Just like you want to for a lens only sale! Lmao!

Seems like the issue is they did it before, no prob and no charge.

But now - WHAMO!! - charging for a service that was included as part of the job previously. While not the first time...certainly slimy on the lab's part. At best - truly awful communication with their employer. In this case, that's Dr K.

Doc, may want to check with your lab's rep and see if they can pull any strings for you. In the case of managed care, there may not be much they can do. But absolutely on private pay jobs, there could be some flex on their part.

Oddly, they are no-charging me, but I had to request that I want it. Now all my jobs get it automatically, again.

I don't get it, but whatever.

In todays world of people who do not want to work I see how a lab would be strapped for help. Without enough people to processes the jobs then jobs processed per day are down. Now add a polishing process on that job which will add another minute sometimes two minutes per job which per day those extra few minutes will add up to less jobs processed. Less jobs processed equates to less revenue for the lab and longer turn around time on your jobs.

If an extra minute or two on a job is enough to keep a lab from delivering quality work - thats not a lab I'd want to work with.

I am not paid by Cherry Optical but we just made the switch and edge polishing is free but you do need to specify it. It's literally just ticking a box on the order form of what type of polish you want. I am doing satin on pretty much everything now because with our other lab we were charged for it. It makes everything look nicer and you don't get the annoying reflections of a high luster polish. :)

I like Cherry and we have an active account but nothing is free there. Cherry's edging charges are the highest I've seen. We use Singer Optical for most of our orders. Singer does excellent work at a significant savings when in comparison. Zyl edging is free, metal is under 2.50. I've been using them since 2005, excellent family run lab.
