    Hello,

I just passed my abo exam and I signed up for the practical test for New York. I was wondering what I should bring with me to Albany when the test is given in April. Do I need to bring a lens clock,pd ruler, tools, ect..
Any advice on taking the test, what might be asked, what is involved, how long the exam takes.
I just want to be as prepared as possible.

    Thanks,
    Bryan

    Hi Bryan:

You'll get a list from the Board telling you exactly what they require. Basically you will need tools (of your choice) to adjust a frame, take frame and patient measurement (PD's, seg measurements, vertex distance), and you'll need a couple of frames to work with.
...and, yes, a clean pair of shorts.

NY's practical is really pretty comprehensive, and pretty fair if you know your stuff.

And if you do OK then you get your chance at pay-back in 5 years. Your can become an examiner and watch the rookies try not to break a frame in front of you.

Just relax and LISTEN to the questions!

    Good luck,
    Rich

    Confused

My tip, having never taken an American exam, but having taken far too many British ones, is this. Take a calculator. You'll be amazed the way you can't do -1.75 + -0.50 under pressure. (the edit was a spelling mistake, not some prize exam tip that I decided to withhold at the last minute)

I don't know about the NY practical, but just having passed the VA, watch your time. It's amazing how fast those 20 and 40 minute blocks fly by.

A sister of mine sat for the NY practical and she passed. Be ready to adjust a pair of eyeglasses that the instructor crumbled in his/her hand, identify numerous types of lenses (kryptoks, double d segs, lenticular lenses and other oldies) listen carefully and answer the questions clearly. Good luck to you.
