SUMMARY:
Shall dispense and fit spectacles, and other optical aids, working from the prescriptions written by optometrists and ophthalmologists.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.


  • Understand and comply with HIPAA and other regulations concerning client confidentiality.
  • Greet clients in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Identifies clients using at least two identifiers.
  • Interprets optical prescriptions written by optometrists or ophthalmologists.
  • Gives advice to patients on lens type, frames and styling.
  • Takes frame and facial measurements to ensure correct fit and positioning.
  • Advises patients on the use of low vision aids.
  • Perform Humphrey visual field exams.
  • Perform retinal photography.
  • Advises patients when adjustments or repairs to spectacles are needed.
  • Selects, manages and orders a range of optical products.
  • Orders lenses from prescription houses.
  • Checks lenses on delivery to ensure that they meet the required specifications.
  • Arranges and maintains shop displays.
  • Working with sales representatives from vision care product suppliers.
  • Schedules and coordinates client appointments. Confirms appointments by telephone and by mail to ensure client/clinic follow through.
  • Manage client schedule system to ensure optimum utilization of provider time. Communicates changes and/or problems with schedules to Providers.
  • Keeps accurate patient records.
  • Responsible for managing budget and meeting fiscal objectives.
  • Processes Contract Health Services (CHS) paperwork as needed.
  • Manages and or coordinates referrals received by providers.
  • Maintains a professional, organized, and clean working environment by following organizational policies, guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Adheres to accreditation and compliance standards/guidelines.
  • Assists in development of policies, procedures, and quality improvement activities within the clinic as directed.
  • Performs other task as required.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the UIHS mission, vision and guiding principles.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Educational degrees must be from a US Department of Education accredited school.

Level I

  • Must have High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Certified Optician


Level II


  • Must have High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Certified Optician
  • Must have four (4) years’ experience as a Dispensing Optician.
