Handstone care: feeding, watering, hospice care, etc...

    Hey Crew!

So back in the days of my youth, when they were discussing the merits of the Louisiana purchase, and edgers still used diamond wheels - we could dress them every so often, and replenish the cutting surfaces.

I've got an ancient handstone downstairs here, and it's definitely seen better days as well. Probably 20-30 years old at a best guess. Original wheel. Can they be resurfaced to get more bite again, or is it a matter of just replacing the entire wheel itself? I've recently been tasked with doing more of our in-house edging work, and am finding much of the equipment is a very sad state. And it literally was 15 years back that I did any of this on a regular basis before, so am re-learning many of the basics again.

    TIA!

If the wheel’s diamonds are imbedded you can use a truing stick to expose new diamonds. If it’s plated you’ll need a new wheel. Truing a plated wheel knocks off the diamonds and just leaves you with a bare metal wheel.

As far as re-plating, it will cost more than a new wheel.

I've had one of these for more than 10 years.

If it is a ceramic wheel, you'll need a diamond and a fixture to correct. same goes for a blue stone. If it is a diamond, lightly go over it with a white dressing stick (wetted). My age is showing!

Thanks guys! No pedal on this one. Used to be steam powered...well, that was after the mule turned wooden sprocket contraption failed of course. :)

I may suggest they simply look at getting a whole new unit as it's pretty ancient all around. The one on Ebay certainly is worth showing the bosses and getting their approval. Likely the best option for the long haul. Cheers all!

    Here's the offending beast!

If I had to guess, (which I do), I'd guess this was a plated wheel and not embedded. Though it's in super rough shape regardless.

Yep, that’s a plated. The rust-through on the surface is a giveaway.

Yeah, thought so too. I'll talk to the powers that be, and see if they can be talked into a new unit entirely. :)

    Cheers!!

You can get a new wheel from super abrasive for that edger. https://superabrasive.com/products/o...edging-wheels/

I bet that nu-tec you have has a 10x better motor than that ebay special.

Could be - although it's been making funny noises for about a year now. I *know* it's never been serviced, cleaned, oiled, any of that. Ever.

So far at least, we haven't let the magic blue smoke out from it's innards. Yet!

Superoptical has new wheels. The funny noise could be the belt and they have those also.1-800-543-7376 or www.superoptical.com
    They also have new units.

Yup... I'd look into a new one. The one I have is similar to the ebay one and it works just fine. I am very picky with the care of equipment and clean it and make sure to empty the water at night etc. Good care and it should hold up well.
