OK, another drill and materials question...

We're doing a rimless TF job. Poly isn't preferred because of our spider-crack experience. (Spider crack, spider crack. Friendly optical spider crack.)

Trivex is unavailable (which we charged for), leaving us with 1.67 and 1.56.

    Can we drill 1.56 successfully?

You'll do better with 1.67, 1.56 too brittle

We do most of our rimless drill jobs in poly with almost zero issues. But if you had to choose between the two mentioned I agree with Fluegge Optical, 1.67.

    Is 1.6 available?

We have very few issues with poly. Sharp drill bits helps.

You should be able to get 1.60. While Trivex is by far my preferred material, I'll use MR-8 1.60 or MR-10 167 with success, when necessary. You just have to much more careful when putting everything together.

IMHO, poly is crap, and I don't use it, except on demo lenses.

Actually, 1.60 has a higher tensile strength than most of our commonly used materials, and has better abbe’s than most.

I have my own line of nut-and-bolt rimless frames, and I use it all the time on those. For Silhouette and other compression fittings, though, trivex is the best.

1.67 over 1.56 by a country mile, but prepare to empty your wallet $$$$$$$$. Who makes a FT in 1.60? I've not had any problems getting trivex FT28s.

Silhouette is using 1.60 as a base material for their lab work. 1.60 is definitely under rated.

I have used 1.67 often with Silhouettes and haven't had any issues. Trivex is my go to but sometimes you just can't (good luck getting 7x28 trivex now. Not sure about the back orders, but they were awful!). That being said... I always tell the patient that I prefer trivex and why and why I am recommending the 1.67 for them now and what the downsides are. I always tell them that the lenses can crack if they do something to them (step on them etc). Knock on wood... never had a problem, but like I said, I have a full discussion regarding the upsides and downsides.

I was able to get it from Essilor. Still shows at http://lenslist.com. Not aspheric. Before Trivex, I frequently used Spectralite, which was aspheric.

Why is a poly drilled an issue?

Isn't this resolved by labs smoothing holes or Mr Ryser's famous drill seal?

I order drilled poly all the time and rarely find it spider cracking.

I do poly on Ovvu grooved full metal and while trivex is my first choice they are not haunting me.

    Uncle Fester beat me...

Chris Ryser of OMS Optochemicals used to carry a product called ‘Drill Seal.’ Used on poly drill holes rendered the poly uncrackable. I don’t know if anybody picked up this patent and are selling it today but it works very well. I think the major component was Carbon Tetrachloride. Not the safest of chemicals so gloves and fume mitigation should be used. PPG’s Tribrid would also be a good choice as nice Abbe and good tensile strength abeit no FT 7x28 yet?

McCray Optical in Toronto, Ontario has the rights to all of Chris Ryser's formulae. Drill Seal is exactly the same product as Chris' Instant Poly Edge Polisher.
