    Polarized density options...

My lab has access to single vision Polarized Poly Gray 3 and Gray 1.

She wants something darker than an indoor wearable Gray 1 but noticeably lighter than a Gray 3.

How high a risk do I take in having my lab tint polarized Gray 1 to 60ish percent?

I've done that many times and never had a problem.

You may be voiding any lens warranty, though.

You can do it, but expectations are a concern. Make sure they are realistic.

Take a flash-mirror coated clear lens and notice that the transmission is cut by (I'm estimating) about 10%. (Heck, take a good blue-blocker AR---which is barely different than a flash coat, IMHO---and note the same.)

Therefore, just put a flash mirror on polar A, and it won't look so damned dorky on the wearer, either.

But in all earnestness, I am making a concerted effort to eliminate that kind of P.I.A. inquiry around here. If someone wants such a non-standard item, I'm going to charge them out the wazoo for it, and say "nope" by saying "yes!".

Remember too that the lighter the polar filter, the lower the efficiency of any polar effect - and that efficiency drops fast. For a case like this, better to just do a simple tinted lens instead. Polar "A" is all but worthless functionally.

This was my suggestion but she insists on polarized so I left it at that.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Strange. In short, this pt is insisting to pay more for an effect she won't really have, and for a lens that will also likely not be warrantable either. I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but sometimes people who "know" what they want still really confuse me. *shrug*

Good luck Buddy! I know you'll make her happy regardless.
