    >>Task Specific Eyewear

I am helping to write an article for 20/20 magazine's Lenses & Technology section on the subject of occupational/recreational specific eyewear. The article is mainly going to focus on the products that exist within the industry today and how those products are researched and chosen by ECP's.

I am wondering if anybody has any kind of input on this topic. What I am looking for is how you go about the process of matching patients with very specialized, individualized eyewear. It could be finding specific glass materials for welders, finding spot segs for jewelers, or even specialized frames for medical personnel.

Any kind of input would be great.

    Hi,

When you're trying to match someone with task specific eyewear the first step is asking lifestyle questions like:

    Occupation
    Recreation, sports, hobbies, crafts, etc.....
    Reading habits

Many opticians have customers fill out a lifestyle question sheet and then proceed from there. Once a need is found then the optician will select the proper lens- frame combination. There are too many to list here.

One thing you may want to add is not to sell a customer something that won't meet their expectations. Sometimes a customer is sold a task specific set of glasses that isn't warrented and later they wonder why they bought it. The cost of the eyewear must be warranted.

As far as a list of occupational lens ideas there are many publications and books where these can be found. Maybe you could try to get a copy of the lenses catalog that accompanies frame facts.

Good Luck and I'll look forward to reading your article.
