Cold sore spread virus to my eyes...

I've been fighting a cold sore for a few days and my doc and myself think, because we are still masked, I've managed to breath the virus up into my eyes.

First the right eye (the side the sore was on), now the left, which, granted might have been spread by touch or surface like a towel or pillow cover.

So now I'm stuck as my Doc is following state Optometric Society recommendations to require masks when interacting with patients until the sore heals.

    A dilemma and bummer.

And fwiw- Yes- I do believe in masks for our profession as long as those smarter than me* say we should.

I'm also thinking the wise choice is for me to take a few weeks off (with pay!) while I heal. My doc disagrees.

    *(everyone?)

I think cold sores are a type of herpes and are contagious, but some folks don’t get them. My ex used to get them often, thank goodness I’ve never had one. Heal quickly!

There are many variations of herpes as most viruses mutate.

And no....mine is not related to the STD herpes that always first comes to mind! That one (simplex 1?) in your eyes you do not want from what I've heard.

Yea, cold sore herpes aren’t an STD…..but….if you got ‘em already…wouldn’t be necessarily a bad way to get ‘em …

I get cold sores from stress. I feel your pain. Although I can't advise with it in your eyes, I can tell you to go out and get some Lysine (vitamin). Also Lysine topical unless you're on a topical already. I take Lysine EVERY day to prevent cold sores and even double up when things are crazy (like Christmas). Since I started doing that 1) I rarely get them and 2) when I do, they are way less severe. I hope that helps!

Herpetic keratitis isn't fun! We see this fairly often in my office. Usually it's shingles that spread to the eye. Hope your eye feels better!
