    Question Drill mount shape question

    Hey there fellow Optiboarders,

Long time lurker and big fan

Just a question about creating drill mount shapes. Lets pretend someone has some mad skills and created a few crazy awesome shapes. Can shapes be patented? Is that even a possibility or worth attempting?

    Thanks for your time!

You could get a design patent which covers the appearance of an object but a slight modification would go around your patent. Remember a patent only gives you the right to go to court to defend it. There are no patent policemen who will stop offenders.

The best way to assure others won't make what you've designed is to make it too difficult to replicate.

It would be better to copyright them.

Highly unlikely there could be any protections or claims of ownership on rimless shapes. Unless you made a collection of them for some kind of art installation at a gallery, you might be able to copyright that art collection as your own. But not just the shapes. You could get a design patents like someone said but that isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Even if you found a way to do it, how would you enforce it? See someone on the street wearing your shape design and try and track down their optician? What kind of "crazy awesome shapes" are you making? I've made and seen all kind of weird ones, pianos, guitars, animals, sport logos, etc. They are a one off thing. No need to patent them.
