    Colored glass WITHOUT AR ??

I have a patient that has been getting gray 3 glass lenses for years and now multiple labs are telling me these require backside AR. The patient absolutely does not want AR, he wants glass lenses because he wants loooooooow maintenance! Are any glass labs still making these colored glass lenses without any AR ?

Even so, wouldn't glass with backside AR be maintenance free?

I haven't sold a lot of glass, but I thought the big benefit of glass is its scratch resistance. Extra coatings on top of glass are going to almost have to be less scratch resistant right?

Maybe it's the old technology but I always thought the adherence of AR on glass was poor leading to problems. It's been years since I actually ordered AR on a glass lens (not including plano suns that already have it on).

Yeah I thought the same thing. I would guess there haven't been many companies spending R&D money on fixing that kind of problem when the market share of glass is miniscule.

Last time I ordered AR on glass was 2 years ago and I remember I couldn't do any of the newer AR coatings. It let me input the job with new AR but got a call from the lab saying they can't do it with anything but standard AR.

I'm the least lab-guy on here, but I thought AR on glass was like <insert offensive joke, here, that means "really tight">.

Properly etched, AR bonds very well to glass, but it isn’t low maintenance. By that, I mean smudges. That’s what most complain about.

Probably true. And yet, the smudges are there, anyway, with or without.

What are plano RayBans these days? Still glass G-15? Wit or witout AR?

Wit or witout is a Philly CheeseSteak reference for those of you in Rio Linda. And Rio Linda is a Rush Limbaugh reference for those of you in Rio Linda.

Depends. Some are glass. Some are poly. Some have BSAR. Some don’t.

True. Kinda like 80dB vs 90dB. I can’t hear to it’s too loud!

I have ordered tinted glass without backside AR (only a couple tines) from Luzerne successfully. Usually the patients who are insistant on glass are older men who want it for the scratch resistance and can't really be "arsed" to clean lenses with AR (properly) with lens cleaner and a soft cloth. They're dry dirty tshirt wipers.

I mostly sold them to farmers, they hated to have dirty glasses in the field and worry about scratching them.

Solidar can also do glass, but I know they were beginning to phase it out. With covid, I'm not sure how far along, or how quickly, they started the process. And can absolutely request it with no AR.

No joke...Glass is the best substrate for AR.

Rayban (uhm...usually barberini lens) can have glass with hitech AR with low smudge...barberini for other lines have create a mineral Ar with Uv back protection like zeiss or crizal...

Many lab have not money to waste because glass lens are minuscle market...

Today... So they do not put high end ar on it... usually they have a different top coat (more smudge)

Ex (almost in Europe) essilor mineral Ar is so good
