    Paying OD

    Happy new year everyone! I am looking to purchase a practice from an OD this summer/fall. I am going to be hiring a new OD and I would like to know from all you optician owners that have an OD at there practice how you go about paying him/ her. What the best way would be financially. Do you pay them hourly or do you pay them the money from the exams they do??? Thank you in advance! Happy new year!

    If you're an optician, I don't think you can have a practice with an optometrist as an employee in MA.

    The ODs aren't their employees, though.

    Right. I assume they make there money from the exams that they do only in that particular practice.

    This thread wares me out! Good read, I am so sad I didn't find this place 11 years ago, would've been a fun thread to be a part of.

    And Steve prefers Optiboard to be the Dragnet's Joe Friday of the three O's sites.

    "Just the facts Ma'am/Sir."

    You have to read it to get the corny ware (Corningware- get it;) pun but I think OB is not what it was (from another thread by Lensman11?) because so much of what anyone wants answered these days can be found with a little digging using the search option.

    Check your particular states optom laws. Common in many places, (not all);

    * separate entrance
    * optician can’t employ OD

    as far as compensation, the usual is;

    optician provides separate entrance
    optician provides exam lane equipment ( state of the art if you want to stand out, and also draw an OD in easier.)
    optician provides, minimum a receptionist/phone/greeter person ( preferably a person that can also tech)
    optician pays rent for said space and leases to the dr. Many times for as low as a dollar.
    Dr. Keeps exam fees (including fitting fees).
    optician keeps all material fees (cl’s, glasses, ect.)

    There is some substantial up front costs to put in a lane, especially if you want to project the most tech forward look to your practice, you’ll also land a dr easier with up to date equipment.

    keep in mind if your area is heavy VSP, they generally don’t do contracts with locations less than 51% OD/OMD owned. You’ll need to find other insurance providers if that’s the route you want to take.

    There are a lot of things to consider bringing an OD into a Optician practice.
