Redhot Jumper Measure twice, order once

+9.75 RD22 in a 66ED frame. Don’t blame the lab if they reject the order.
Call the lab first to check blank size and availability.
And…..you originally sold this in a PAL with a +3.75 add that turned into a non adapt.
This patient complaint is on you.
    Rant over.

Yikes. Not sure if this was the case, but it sure would be nice of these chain and big box opticals provided some more in depth training and provided at least a little education on optics and how lenses are made. I have a friend who was hired at a certain big box discount store's optical with no prior experience and was given bare bones training and then left to work as the only optician - no other coworkers. At the low wages they pay, you can pretty much guarantee the salespeople are not going to seek out any more training or education on their own. This kind of thing is the result!

This was an ABOC, WITH a lab background. Quote from the ABOC, “patient refuses anything smaller”. Might I add that NPD was 29.5?

I provide training, have our reps provide training (frame and lens), share John Seeger’s videos, create cheat sheets and PPT slides, share relevant CE links, etc.
For some reason, neither my 35+ years in the business, nor IOT/Zeiss trainings matter to them. They just “know it all”.

At some point you have to tell the customer no, if you cannot do that what are you even doing?

Even a novice optician should know that a 29 pd and a 66 ED is not a good fit. Then you throw in a +9.75, they are going to look terrible.

"I understand you want a larger frame but this is not going to work out very well. Do you know what a prism is? Lenses at their most basic are basically two prisms put together. Let me draw you a picture, with your Rx the thickness will be in the middle of the lens because that is where the bases of the two prisms are. It is going to be extremely thin on the outside so if you pick out a larger frame there is a very good chance the lab will not be able to make a lens that is going to be thick enough on the edge that will hold in that larger frame. So ideally you want a frame that is as small as you can tolerate where your eye is closer to the center. I promise you even if the lab can make this lens--it is going to look awful. Let's find you a frame that will work out better for your complicated Rx."

I think IOT’s new Shape-rendered digital blending allows for formally style/Rx mismatches like this example. I have personally used both plus and minus higher Rxs with terrific results.

One thing I have learned just in life overall is sometimes you just have to say no. A lot of opticians are afraid to say no. I would make sure IF the lab does make them that the optician in question has to dispense them.

This is the kind of stuff I talk about with my coworkers. Having worked in the lab... I've seen things! It always amazes me the stuff that "opticians" will order. ABO doesn't always mean good. I worked with an ABO optician who was totally clueless and I worked with an experienced optician that was not ABO and was awesome. Sad. I feel like having the lab background and seeing crazy stuff like this has helped me be a better optician. And yes... you have to be able to say no.

I like the way you put that. Very succinct. Very easy to communicate.

Forgive me Lab's for I have sinned...

I too occasionally send a, shall we say, challenge to our labs.

Anyone know why I earn the sobriquet "Lightning" Fester when I do this?

Challenging is one thing. I like challenges.
Impossible is another. The RD22 was only available to us in a 65mm blank.

I loved telling them no, when I'd dispense, back in the lab so i don't deal with pts anymore

The other day I, a former surfacing lab manager, sold a FT polar lens to fit in the patient's own frame- the Oakley SplitShot... which has a 64 eye and 71 ED.

What was I thinking?? I would need over an 80 PD for that to make cut out... *sigh I had to take full blame when the lab called to tell us it wouldn't make cut out. Thankfully, he had another frame he was willing to use so we saved the sale, only lost some time, but he was really cool about it. I think I was more upset than he was!

If I would have been in my right mind, I would have had no problem telling him the issue- I simply didn't think of it. Apparently a year out of the biz was enough to throw me off my game!
Have I told you today how much I hate poly?

    Possibly a 69 NPD would have worked, though.......in a 80mm blank
