This is really ironic. You sent me this same message in an email and my Norton Internet Security tagged your email as 'spam'. ;)

There are many software products out there. Personally, I do not get more than 10 messages (of spam) a month. So I've never felt the need for a 'de-spammer'. However I do use SPYBOT to keep the little crawlies (spy cookies, etc.) off my systems at home and on the road.

I'm always amazed at the number of people who get mass messages in their email. Perhaps I'm missing something.

    JRS,
I am envious! It seems like the number of spam emails has gotten especially bad in the last month or so. I routinely get about 15 spams when I log on for the first time each day, and at least 2-3 more later in the day.

I first tried Mail Washer about a month ago, but it doesn't seem to be working. I must have set up the account wrong -- I am going to call my ISP for help as I am getting desperate. I try to get to the emails and delete the junk before my kids see those dumb Viagra ads, but you never know when they will get to the computer first.

This ain't exactly opti material but adaware from lavasoft is a must. If you're kinda green then SPYBOT can mess up some of your programs, specifically media player. Also go to your security settings and click advanced. Set your active x controls to prompt. It's a bit of a pain when you visit some sites because you have to click a box to allow them to load but it's a lot better then removing Xupiter from your system. One other tip(I wont bore you with tons) go to tools then content and then publishers. Trusted root publishers should be empty. Check it out. If theres anything in there that you dont know should be on your pc then delete it. Basically anything in this folder oks a company to download stuff to your computer.

You had problems with SpyBot Ed? You running XP or 98? The only thing you have to exclude is the standard stuff you want.

I use both spybot and adaware. I have seen forums online where less experienced users have deleted necessary files. Nothing terminal but can be kind of annoying.
    XP btw.

    Optical SPAM is starting,,,,,,,

Since one week prior to Vision Expo East, optical SPAM has started and is increasing by the week.

Thanks to having my e-mail with yahoo, the SPAM gets sorted into a SPAM category and can all be deleted in one shot. An occasional Spam gets into the regular e-mail but I can handle that.

    The cost of spam ............................

Here is a copy of an advertising spam to doctors, including optical related ones i just received, probably of general interest.
Obviously at $ 0.20 per spam and sending hubdreds of thousands in one shot, there is some money to be made. ...........

Comparison of Advertising Costs to Doctors

$2.00 The cost of an ad in a medical magazine, per doctor. *
$1.57 The cost of sending a direct mail piece to a doctor using standard mail. **
$1.41 The cost of having a sales rep spend 3 minutes with a doctor. ***
$0.20 The cost of an interactive email ad sent to a doctor. ****

    * Assumes a full page ad costing $15,000. in a specialty medical journal with a circulation of 15,000., and liberally assuming that half the subscribers will see the ad.

** Conservatively assumes 37 cents cents for postage, 10 cents for an envelope, 10 cents labor costs, $1.00 for content / brochure. There may be additional content creation and licensing fees. There is no way to track whether the doctor received the mailing and whether they read it. Many office managers discard ads before the doctor sees it.

*** There are 85,000 medical sales reps in the USA costing medical companies $5 Billion per year. A sales rep therefore earns an average of $59,000 / year or 47 cents per minute. Current estimates indicate sales reps spend about 3 minutes with a doctor. Of course there are additional costs such as brochures and samples given to doctors. Many doctors, however, refuse to meet or speak with sales reps.

**** The average total cost, but varies from 13 cents to 27 cents on average, depending on content and volume of email broadcast. Email is the most interactive and targeted advertising modality with many other advantages over traditional advertising: direct links to your web site with exact web site hit count; easily track which doctor went to your web site and target those specific doctors with additional email follow up. Email messages can be rapidly and inexpensively changed in reaction to market conditions, competitors actions and announcements of new products or services.

    More On Spam

The other day I went to the mailbox (snail type). When I walked into the house I was carrying 11 flyers, 4 plastic see-throughs with at least a dozen coupons in them, 1 phone bill, 1 power bill, 2 credit card bills, and one . . . . ADVO packet (with a Pearl coupon). Don't tell me that "ain't" SPAM. When I got to the computer 67 SPAMS came through. It was easier to "delete" the spams than carry the mail. The mail had very much the same as the spams. No law against the junk mail forthcoming. SPAM, yes. In my business I study SPAM. Who and where it comes from. Interestingly: less than 1.0% come from merchants within 5 miles of my home. One came through with an imbedded audio message . . . from Vistakon. When I see an advertising email from a local merchant, somehow it feels like I'm committing a sin to delete it. That guy deserves my business. It stays on a little longer. Somehow, and maybe I'm nuts, I tend to develop a sense of vigilante behavior and kill the spam from h- - l and leave the local guy on. In one way or "tuther", he's going to get my business. As for the spam with the Ginsu knives and the atomic flashlight . . . I learned that clicking the "remove me from your list" does exactly that . . . it removes me from THAT list. And, it also tells the guys with the Ginsu knives and the atomic flashlight . . . "Hey, everybody ELSE. . . . got a hot one here. This guy reads this stuff. The rest of you keep sending them . . . Sooner or later this guy is going to buy something." So, now I know I belong to at least one other NEW mailing list every time I click the "remove me". New rule: Once a week I will remove all my cookies except one: Optiboard! (But, I really want that atomic flashlight . . . it's soooo cool!)

    Blue Jumper Yesterda's SPAM ..................................

Unbelievable, but yesterday a holiday in the USA and I had only 2 Candian Spams listed out of an average 40 - 60 per day.

Seems that the Spamers must have seriously observed yesterday's holiday

    PayPal scam rises again
PayPal users are once again the targets of a hit-and-run e-mail scam aimed at conning them out of their personal and financial information. On Thursday, netizens began receiving a convincing forgery of a PayPal e-mail, with the subject line "PayPal Verification" and the false return address verification@paypal.com.

The text of the message claims that PayPal -- owned by online auctioneer eBay -- has launched an anti-fraud initiative that requires the recipient to verify their account information on a particular website, "as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account." http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/30837.html

I currently use SpamNet from Cloudmark. It integrates with Outlook and disposes Spam to a user-specified folder. The neat thing is that any email that is considered spam can be deleted by one user and is then deleted for every user with the software. There is also a function to move it back to your inbox if you disagree and think it is a valid email. The deleted emails are based upon a percentage of how many people deleted or restored that particular email. The company claims to get rid of over 90% of Spam. It works great for me. Check out the website:
