    Material Bottleneck

Is anybody else having trouble ordering jobs in trivex? Our labs have been having almost everything on backorder, and we've been having to put people in hi index, even if the rx doesn't necessarily call for it. Is the material on back order at every lab?

Oh no!! I have not run into this yet with my lab but it's good to have a heads-up if it is coming my way.
Have I told you today how much I hate poly?

Can I ask which lab you use? Seeing as there may be a shortage, I wouldn't blame you if you kept that info to yourself.

Yeah I just got the call from the lab today almost immediately after reading this post LOL! No Trivex bifocals or trifocals for 3 months... The lab person said we can swap them into high index instead of poly and I am like you do know the abbe value of high index is the almost exactly the same as poly right? Oh well, CR39 or mid-index for the next 3 months isn't the end of the world.

Cherry Optical out of Green Bay. We have been VERY happy with them. They do outsource for Hoya product which is the only time we tend to run into backorders and delays.

We actually just got in a Trivex 7/28 Trans. from the end of January. Was ordered through one vendor for a month, then we switched to another vendor to cut nearly a month off the lead time.

Just spoke to my lab rep and she said it's because these lenses are from Essilor and Essilor is having back order issues. Currently only Essilor makes Trivex 7x28, but Trivex bifocals can be sourced by other manufacturers. So on our end, we are only affected with 7x28 which have a 3 month backorder. So if your lab is an Essilor lab and they are telling you that bifocals are backordered too, then they are only sourcing from Essilor and not other vendors.

Everyone is experiencing problems with the supply chain these days, not just the eye care businesses. COVID and changes in the international commerce will be somewhat problematic for some time to come. In particular strained relations with China will greatly effect us.

Sounds like the issue is at an Essilor factory so I wonder if the blanks are being made in Thailand which is, shall we say, restless, these days.

Yup, I was just I was informed that all Trivex segmented multifocals will be unavailable until September at the earliest, more likely the end of the year. I don't know if Phoenix (Hoya's Trivex based material) is also backordered. There might be some 1.60 index available but how long will that last? There also might be enough back stock or ramping up of poly production to fill the gap, but I can imagine a worst case scenario where there is a complete sell out of all segmented multifocals. What a mess.

Hmm. I guess we shouldn't be relying on "good relations" with a foreign country to keep our lives in order, then?

So another idea... I've been doing a few of those xtra active polarized transitions. They are not avail in a FT but I'v switched people to a digital round seg and that seems to be working out ok. Since all you need is just a SV lens blank, you can do it in trivex or poly if you are really stuck. I have only done this a few times, but it's just another option to keep in the back of your mind and the cost difference is very low.

Given the issues that have cropped up with collapsing supply chains during COVID, the sentiment to start doing more at home has probably never been stronger.

My Essilor lab laughed at me when I asked about ST Trivex... Not great Bob.

I've gotten a few Trivex FT28s last month from indy labs. Nothing else in trivex though, no 7x28s or FT35 etc.

Trivex availability is still 50/50 for us as well. Even SV and PALS are hit and miss. *shrug*

    Just curious.

Does Trivex affect edgers more than other materials?

Yep, it’s like edging hard rubber. I always switched our edger roughing wheels with wheels made to cut trivex, even on a new edger. Huge difference in cutting and life span of those wheels.

I had to order an insurance order with an essilor lab. They told me all Trivex is back ordered indefinitely. My local lab has no problem except 7x28, which they are saying is bo until end of Oct, but with getting into the country being so difficult, probably more realistically the end of the year.
