    Vip progressive

Sad news about the VIP... It is nearly totally discontinued.

I know lots of young folks love the digital progressives, but a lot of older folks dont....

The traditional progressives are slowly poofing....

Its been an interesting journey seeing changes for the last 37 years...

    Glass
    Progressives
    Insurance
    Internet
    and so many other things...

It would be tough starting out on ground floor now with all the roadblocks now....

Wow. I'm stunned to learn this lens was still available. We did a lot of VIPs and XLs when I was first starting in 1989.

I worked at SOLA for 14 years, beginning with the launch of the XL Progressive. The VIP was a great design for it's time. R.I.P.

I find this to be a very bizarre comment. Would you care to elaborate as to what about "digital progressives"(pretty vague) older folks don't like?

@Kwill212 I think in my little experience that some people used "old design progressives" may have years ago a little difficult with freeform design cause digital progressive (usually, not true always) have the ADD grind in the backside.... old pal have ADD in the front mold.

I think now the modern design are so good and there are not problems changing an old pal to new design.

Agreed. I think that statement was accurate in the early days of digital PALs, but not any more.

What would be a good modern alternative for a patient that has worn the VIP since the 90's? I did fit her in a Sola One lens a couple years ago with no complaints but both lenses have been discontinued.

Man, I'd just put her in a modern FF lens and watch her smile.

Literally anything made in the last 5 years. Why are people still fitting ancient lenses? Boggles the mind.

I wouldn't use just anything. Keep in mind what the person was wearing, and if they liked it, find something with similar -- but better -- qualities. I would stick the some of the choices listed above in my earlier post.

I wouldn't use just anything either. But anything made in the last 5 years is certainly going to be a better option than going from a 30 year old lens to a 28 year old lens to a 25 year old lens, etc.

+1 for the Physio DRx. I have had some success with it for people who prefer more intermediate vision.

The modern digital progressives are very nice, but some good grinders are still widely available. The traditional Comfort is as excellent as it ever was, I still use it a lot especially for older patients who like the highly prioritized near vision. If you need a cheapie I've had good luck with the Shoreview.

Off-topic: doesn't the Comfort design keep the near zone size stable, as the add goes up, at the expense of the distance zone width? (cf: Physio, which is the opposite.)
P.S., IIRC, the intermediate zone is an especially low priority.
    Truth, or fiction?

That's kind of been my understanding of the designs since the days of traditional Comfort/Physio, before any of the digital designs. Comfort existed long before the digital age (as in the age of computer and device use, not the age of free form lens design) and was prioritized such, with distance and near of ultimate concern and intermediate was just incidental. Physio was the response to Comfort in the beginning of the digital age with a wider and higher (more rapid progression) intermediate. Of course more intermediate necessarily means more compromise in other areas, so I would consider Physio a very soft design, practically mushy. However as Essilor's extensive real-wearer testing purports to show, the majority of wearers are less concerned with precision than they are with comfort (the famed "20/happy") so the Physio works very well. But I do still use the Comfort, both traditional and digital, for wearers I believe have less intermediate need.
