    Driving/computer bifocal

I have a client with script
    -2.50 -0.75 78 +1.75 +2.25
    -2.25 -100 100 +1.75 +2.25

He want to have distance at the top and computer at the bottom to read the dash.

I have done heaps of these but this script has me confused

    Can anyone decipher this one

I suspect that the prescriber has already done the work. The +1.75 should have been written in the special instructions area of the written Rx, with the usage/work distance noted.

I usually send the client out to their car with my tape measure, instructing them to measure to the instrument cluster and display, then set up that distance at the dispensing table with a reading card and trial frame.

These 'driving eyeglasses' are typically for older, segmented multifocal wearers. Most will need a separate pair with the full add for the best general purpose near vision.

    Best regards,

In other words, it appears that the prescriber has already determined the correct add value for the subject to see optimally inside of their vehicle. It may not have been written in a way that clearly states the prescribers intent. Call the prescriber to confirm.

Yeah, hard to fault the prescriber here. Seems like he did the work to adjust for focal length. Although I'd be relatively comfortable with what to expect domestically - I cant say I'm familiar with how foreign countries write Rx's. Robert is right of course, unless they do things differently where we're not. Have had some weird looking Rx's from abroad.

Regardless, +1.75 seems a mite too strong for any dashboard....unless they're driving mini cars in the UK.

Whatwith depth of focus and all, a TF-style add is more than enough.

Agreed. I would have assumed a +1.25 add here.

As already stated it depends on the distance. I have seen some with the seat all the way forward and others that you can't even see the driver... seat back way reclined and all the way back.

I've filled a lot of Rx's that are distance/intermediate. Usually the OD writes the "extra" add power in the comments section of the Rx. For instance, Use +1.75 add for intermediate. I do agree that seems a bit too strong for the dash, but who knows what the conversation was in the exam room. Sometimes you can just ask the patient if they discussed it with the OD. If in doubt, call the OD and verify before making lenses. If you have trial lenses with which you can send them out to their car, you can verify that way. I don't have the ability to do that here.
