    Slab-Off Pal

Anyone here ever dispense a Slab-off PAL? Our lab says it can be done on non-digital progressives, I've only done a handful of FT28 w/slab off so I'm not sure what a good traditional progressive designs would be for this patient...patient is in a zeiss choice progressive currently.

    RX is
    -1.75 -0.75 x112
    +3.00 -4.50 x090
    +2.50

I have but critical measure will be reading depth. Typically for FT 28 10mm is used. Determine reading gaze based on PRP. For the few I did, 12 to 14 mm was used.

With a +2.50 add if this is a FT conversion to a first time progressive.....

    JUST DON"T DO IT!

If you must- charge big, big bucks (I'd be in the $1,000 range) and put them in the best Zeiss (if that's what you deal with) available to compensate for the high cyl's axis shift necessary for the downgaze, and with a short corridor. Even then forewarn them that the intermediate may still not work.

I'll defer to others with more experience if they have another suggestion but I would do everything I could to talk them out of this tar-baby you are about to embrace.

But then again- who knows if Ryser's Rule will work!

Be sure to have them sign a waiver that there will be no refund if/when it fails.

This patient is a seasoned progressive wearer but I'm going to try to talk her out of it, since it sort of defeats the purpose and aesthetics of a progressive lens. We shall see. Thanks everyone for your advice.

You might want to hold a trial base up prism to the right(?) eye of an existing pair of progressives- or get a Fresnel for them to trial.

They may be using them monocularly and the slab prism will open a can-o-worms.

Why are you fixing what isn't broken? Or is this request coming from the patient?

US Optical has done them for me before, using IOT PALS Worked well and wasn't super expensive.

It can be done on any digital progressive, the lab just has to put the slab on the front. Younger makes cast slab blanks which could also be used. ( I am not sure they still make the product)
