    Balance issues and corridor length

Every now and then I get older clients with very poor balance. They constantly look downwards searching for something to hold on to. I've always avoided short corridors for these people since it might increase their risk of falling. Am I right in doing so or does it actually not matter as much as I think?

Speaking from personal experience being 80 myself, dont worry about falling. We will fall no matter what you do. Just concentrate on giving me good functional vision. Personally, I prefer a FT-28 Trifocal over any PAL that I have tried.

Well yeah but what about people with really poor balance who are looking for something to grab with every slow step they take? A regular corridor (14mm) gives them some clearer intermediate vision to do just that. I would call that functional. I always make sure they get plenty of near area with 24-30 fitting heights in frames with 38-45mm B measurements.

If they are that compromised they should use a walker. You can play around with lenses until you are blue in the face.
