"Rolls Royce" of Optical Lenses for a patient of mine

    Hi there,

This is my first post on the OptiBoard!!

I have a 25yr old patient at the shop who is myopic (-4.00 in each eye) and was diagnosed with very light astigmatism in each eye. He asked me a question that I just simply did not know how to answer... even after searching on the internet for a very long time.

His question was... "If I wanted to buy the "Rolls Royce" of optical lenses for my frames, what brand and model of lenses would you suggest for my prescription." The patient is in his mid twenties and is a health care professional that spends most of his day on the computer and really wants to invest in the best lenses possible. Even willing to wait and have them shipped internationally if the brand doesn't operate or sell in my country of Canada.

So my question to you is... what should I answer a patient like this? I am getting more and more patients who want the BEST of the BEST and really want to "take care of their eyes"

Thanks and have an awesome day

    Joe

I would tell the patient that there is no standard answer for that question. That's kind of a trick question. There is no "best of the best." Unless you mean quality, best of the best. But optically everyone needs something different and that is a discussion to have with the optician. The optician will make sure you get the best of the best for YOUR eyes. Everyone has different needs. If I told you that this progressive is the best of the best but you're going to be needing glasses for computer then they really aren't the best of the best for you! I know that sounds a bit lame, but there is no "stock" answer. Maybe for this guy, the best would be trivex with AR (insert the best brand/quality here). Or maybe it means transitions? Or maybe blue blocker???

What "other eyecare related field" are you in that you thought you could find the answer to this question by "searching on the internet for a very long time." ?

Would you really want a Rolls Royce? Probably can't take it everywhere you'd want to go. Expensive to fix. Special rules for parts - even an oil change. I read once there's more perfected automotive engineering in a Toyota Camry than anything else on the road. That's probably a better aspiration.

Its amazing how consumers stick out like a sore thumb. There is one big giveaway that they never seem to think about.
