Is rose water safe for the eyes?

I have read in a number of beauty magazines that washing your eyes with rose water helps with keeping them healthy and fresh. However, the rose water I buy is usually packaged. Is it still safe to use?

Agreed with UF, but I can say this, rose water is the hydrosol portion of the distillate of rose petals, which means that its the water fraction when you distill rose petals. Anything that is lipophobic/hydrophillic, such as highly polar organic compounds, will stay in this water fraction. Generally speaking, the water fraction will contain a complex mix of alcohols, alkanes, and terpenoids that will break down into other compounds quickly as they react, and volatilize. Literally none of these should be anywhere near your eyes. Most of them are mucosal irritants. Bottom line: Don't do it.

The risk of eye infection when using home brew or non-sterile (and not filtered, preserved etc.) eye drops is not insignificant.
