Instead of measuring within a few inches of your customers mouth or having them a few inches from yours, compare these options.
Using a measuring device and an iPad app will keep you comfortable at about 3 feet from the patients face while maintaining the iPad as an added barrier between the optician and the customer. Assuming both the customer and the optician are wearing masks, most will find this to be a safe distance when measuring for glasses.
For those that want more, you can either take the measurements with the iPad but having a plexiglass barrier between the customer and the staff taking the measurements.
Another option would be to use the same technology at 6 ft away with placing the iPad on a stand and operating the iPad with a trackpad a blue tooth mouse.
