Since being furloughed for the foreseeable future I've decided to take a deep dive into optics. I am now stuck on monochromatic aberration (oblique astigmatism specifically) and was hoping if someone can shed some light on this.
Astigmatism is created when an off axis object point passes through the lens at an oblique angle. There is 2 focal lines because light passing through the tangential meridian is refracted more so than the sagittal meridian, much like how a sphero-cylindrical lens works. But how is this possible for a spherical lens since the radius of curvature is the same across the lens? I think above all, I am confused about the concept of tangential and sagittal planes of a lens. Can someone ELI5?
