    Drill Mounts in 1.60, 1.66, 1.67, 1.70, 1.74 Lab Rats Needed

    OK
Your real world, actual hands-on, experience.

Do you work in a lab?
    OR
Do you personally do a ton of drill mounts?

What are your guidelines on drill mounts in those materials?

    PLEASE
    PLEASE
    PLEASE
For f-sake if you don't know or you just want to repeat something you saw or heard on the internets keep it to yourself.
If you don't work with those materials in drill mounts then you don't have an answer.

    First you consider the Rx
Next you consider how “stiff” the rimless frame attachment points are.
Next you consider the handling habits of the wearer, if know.
Then choose the lowest index that delivers to right balance between optics and cosmetics.

I know that several of the labs we work with will not drill 1.70 or 1.74, or if they do the job there is an understanding that all lens warranties are null and void. I have several Silhouettes with 1.74 lenses and have never had a problem.

Thanks - Yeah I know some labs won't drill any number of materials. I will mention that in the upcoming video. I also mention that experience like yours with 1.74 (and what Barry said) should be the true guide over any blanket lab policy.

The lab I run REGULARLY makes drill mounts with HI (1.60 -1.74). We do facets and engraving so 1.60 is our new standard, especially for custom Cartier rimless. I rarely have problems with drilling all the way through the lens. I find that partial drill holes (for Chemistre magnetic clip-ons) tend to be more fragile. A good disclaimer before, during, and after any sale is a life-saver!

I find plus powers to be the real difficult ones to deal with, of course the specific rimless in question matters a lot. I find breakage and redos are for sure a bigger issue with these.

I generally prefer almost knife edge trivex than thicker edged 1.6 or 1.67.

Lindbergs for example - I find trivex on plus to be a miraculous material, if you can get a flat base and thin edge surfacing. This is a bit of an art, but done right you can dispense with confidence.

We do a lot of rimless, and we do it all in house.

Barry is right - consider your fit and the index comes later.

    THIS!!!

I always try to use Trivex as my main go to, but will consider other index as needed.
