Is keratoconus treatment a painful process?

My mom was recently diagnosed with keratoconus. She is in her mid 50's and has symptoms including swelling, mild blurring of vision and increased sensitivity to light and glare. When consulted an ophthalmologist they suggested undergoing keratoconus treatment. She is very afraid of pain, so she has hesitation to undergo treatments.

Is keratoconus treatment a painful process? Is this treatment effective? Share your suggestions.
