In my experience, It kind of depends on how much nystagmus the person has.
Some you can refract with phoropter and some you need to use the trial frame, last person i tested.. i asked if how they were measured last time, he said he had always been refracted by phoropter and said it always went fine.
One time i had a person that had a worse case and i had to use the trial frame.

Auto refractor doesn't always work either, it might depend on which type you have however, im not sure but mine didn't grab a measurement.

Most of all, i'd say take your time and give them the time they need. Patience is key here IMO. And if you are not sure about your exam or you don't feel comfortable yet, book another appointment to make sure.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, please.

Trial frame, have them turn their head to find the null point.
